Cardboard is just a thin, light-weight, fairly sturdy building material.

Some of the furniture from Ikea is just one step above cardboard. In fact, the Lack tables are cardboard with a very thin woodish veneer.

John Lennon. The Life. The Free Kindle Book.

I confess that I was not a fan of John Lennon as a person and am not particularly a fan of the Beatles' music (I know, that's almost unAmerican! Wait a minute--they were a British band. Nevermind.). Anyway, I realize that many of you all may be one or the other, or both. So . . . I make this post as an act of service to my dear fellow Mobilereaders. I view this work of posting good ebooks as a work of service. I look at myself as your humble servant. What's that? No, I won't get up and fix your coffee.

John Lennon. The Life. By David Stuart Ryan. Not currently rated at Amazon (it's just been published; however, many of the author's other books sold at Amazon have very high ratings.) Digital list price $5.95; Kindle price now $0.00. http://www.amazon.com/John-Lennon-Li...non.+The+Life..

Although the book has not been rated yet at Amazon, due to the fact that it's just been published, it's free. May I suggest that you read in it a little bit and if you don't like it, just delete it. What have you lost but a little bit of time? Please do review the book at Amazon, though, for the benefit of the rest of us.

Here is the first book to fully reveal the amazing story of the rise of John Lennon's group - The Beatles - to fame and fortune.

David Stuart Ryan carried out a great deal of original research into the true background to John, speaking to many of the characters who helped form his intense view of the world. This was backed up with full access to the files of 'Time' magazine. The result is a comprehensive picture of a great artist living at a time of both tumult and awakening.

The author spoke to many of the key people in John's life, including his formidable Aunt Mimi, who brought him up after his mother's marriage hit problems because of the Second World War.

There is Liverpool DJ Bob Wooler, who was perhaps the first to recognize the genius of the Beatles, he presciently wrote 'There will never be another band like the Beatles again.'

That was written while they were still just a Cavern club lunchtime band.

Then you'll meet his first manager, Alan Williams, who in a most weird and almost preordained way, arranged for the unknown group to take up a prestige residency in Hamburg, an engagement that was to transform them from a run of the mill provincial group into a world beating combination of individual talents.

The seething contradictions of a red light district in early post-war Germany where just about anything went were the forcing ground for an entirely new kind of music.

There are many secrets and surprises associated with John Lennon's early troubled life that are hinted at, but never fully revealed, in many of his songs and hits.

'John Lennon's Secret' reveals these to you one by one.

Strawberry Fields was a Salvation Army run home for abandoned children
which lay just behind his aunt's house. Feeling himself abandoned, it had many associations for him, it was where he could be himself, no wonder it is the subject of his most outstanding and haunting song.

All through this fast moving examination of the life of John Lennon you discover sides to him that are little known, even by those who grew up with him, such as Paul McCartney.

There are more revelations about what exactly the relationship was with his musical partner, and the secrets they shared that made them such a formidable team.

As the myth of the Beatles continues to thrive and grow, it is time for you to find out what really went on in the formation of a band who captured the wonder and amazement of the whole world.

There are more than 20 original photographs in the book to take you behind the scenes and chart the rise of the super group to mega stardom and its ways.

Even if you thought you knew the story, prepare for surprises,
and smiles, on every page of
'John Lennon. The Life.'.

This is the true version of events that shook the musical world.

Free Kindle on Stand Up Paddling

I've got to admit that I break out into a cold sweat any time that I hear or read the word "paddling." It reminds me too much of the times in high school when I just barely avoided it--getting a paddling that is. I went to high school in a time and place when it was still legal. And it seemed like everyone was allowed to do it--the principals, the teachers, the janitors (I'm kidding about the last one--I think) were allowed to do it, and there was no "must have another staff member as a witness," etc. stuff back then. I'm sure glad that I'm not in high school, then and there, at least, anymore . . . .

This book will have limited appeal (but, who knows, maybe someone will decide to take up the sport because of this book). And, I know that this book probably is free as a teaser (if you like Book 1, you'll want Book 2; the author sells Book 2). But, for some reason I feel that one or more Mobilereaders might like to know about this one.

My Funny, Not-Quite-Free-this-Time Kindle for the Day (or Whenever)

I'm sorry, I couldn't find a sufficiently funny Kindle book for free today. Acquiring this funny Kindle book for today (or whenever) will cost you. But, maybe just looking at the cover and perusing a few of the preview pages will tickle your funny bone enough and you won't have to spend a dime.

Listen, I don't mean to offend anyone . . . . if you believe that humans and animals can carry on conversations with each other, well . . . uh . . . please just pretend that this is an ordinary post to the Free and Bargain Non-Fiction in May 2014 thread. Oh, and please ignore any editorial comments that I might make along the way. Okay?

Below is the blurb:
Inspired by a long fascination with Galileo, and by the remarkable surviving letters of Galileo's daughter, a cloistered nun, Dava Sobel has writtenhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B002N1AEY6/ref=sr_1_1_olp?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1401075153&sr=1-1&keywords=urasawa+monster&condition=used a biography unlike any other of the man Albert Einstein called "the father of modern physics- indeed of modern science altogether." Galileo's Daughter also presents a stunning portrait of a person hitherto lost to history, described by her father as "a woman of exquisite mind, singular goodness, and most tenderly attached to me." Galileo's Daughter dramatically recolors the personality and accomplishment of a mythic figure whose seventeenth-century clash with Catholic doctrine continues to define the schism between science and religion. Moving between Galileo's grand public life and Maria Celeste's sequestered world, Sobel illuminates the Florence of the Medicis and the papal court in Rome during the pivotal era when humanity's perception of its place in the cosmos was about to be overturned. In that same time, while the bubonic plague wreaked its terrible devastation and the Thirty Years' War tipped fortunes across Europe, one man sought to reconcile the Heaven he revered as a good Catholic with the heavens he revealed through his telescope. With all the human drama and scientific adventure that distinguished Dava Sobel's previous book Longitude, Galileo's Daughter is an unforgettable story
Okay, it is no longer at the low price of $1.99, but after reading the hard-copy version of this book, I can say it is a most interesting and engaging read. It appears well-researched, and the book is written in such a way that it will prove to be a useful reference for students writing research papers.

If all you know about Galileo is the little you may half-remember from high-school, then you may be surprised to learn how much this man accomplished in his lifetime.

I was intrigued, but ended up passing up on this one when it was $1.99. As much as I'd like to, I just can't afford every book that looks interesting, even those that are marked way down like this one was (too, I buy so many books now that it's impossible for me to ever read all of them!). I read (or maybe just skimmed over) some of the reviews for the book when I initially saw it posted, but if somehow I had been able to read what you had written in your post above, I would have probably bought it then.

There is a website that I know of where I can set a price alert. I think that I'm going to set a price alert for $1.99, and if and when the price drops back down to that again I will know about it and maybe grab it then.

Thanks.

Thanks.
Sorry I couldn't get to it earlier... one can read only so many books at a time.
