When I described the problem I had to Bookeen their response was that they didn't know what the problem was but that I should re-flash the device with version 538 (not the latest version). However, it's possible that if your unit isn't getting to the second screen it's locking up before the point at which it can call the update procedure but it is worth a try.

That's what I'm afraid of. I've emailed Bookeen, and hopefully they will send me the 538 version so I can try that. I did have it hooked up to the laptop--to make sure it had plenty of power, but I don't think I tried turning it on while it was connected. Not sure if that's even a good idea to try. I really don't know what happened...

With the previous firmware I was fairly happy with the device which I mainly use to read PDF's. Since I did the upgrade I can not read ANY PDF anymore.
Am I the only one with this result ? I have asked Bookeen for a link to the older firmware so I can downgrade my device but from past experience I do not have any confidence in Bookeen providing me with a solution so if anybody else can help me with a link to the older firmware I would really appreciate it - I might as well have bricked my device, it's totaly useless to me now and I have to contain myself from throwing it out the window !

Forgive the question, but could you not convert your PDFs to MobiPocket format? The Windows Mobi reader generally does this pretty well.

:-( I really feel Bookeen is not investing enough in their software.

I am really curious how many developers they really DO have on staff.
If only they would open up their software so at least OTHER people could step in to make the device as good as it was promised to be.

I only have a Mac, MobiPocket does not work on Mac.
The only option for me would be to convert them to TXT or something similar that would seriously deminish my reading experience. This is not what I bought the device for, in the specs it says you can read PDF on it.

Look for Cybook Gen3 on wikipedia.com, I stumbled on that page yesterday and it also has a few troubleshooting tips. It might help.

"The safely remove hardware" is really the only way to remove the USB stick safely.
The problem is that when you copy things to the USB it will actually 'cache' things in memory first to speed up this action and the copy to the actually usb stick will happen in the background without you noticeing. In other words, it MAY seem like the copy has occured but in reality it has not. When you shut down your computer OR when you press "safely remove hardware" the data will be flushed out of memory towards the USB. If you leave your USB stick in long enough you will never have a problem either because the data is flushed out slowly but surely.

You have a lot to loose if the new one introduces new bugs.

Not really. You can always go back to 538 if you don't like the new one.

There are a few people here who installed the 538 firmware after they installed this latest firmware and had no problems whatsoever. This is a good recovery procedure - if you have the 538 firmware.

Get BookDesigner, use Adobe Acrobat Pro to export your PDFs as HTML or Word .doc and, running a Windows emulator, use BookDesigner to create a Mobi version. Everyone knows that these 6" models aren't the best for PDF files, and that the Cybook has "problems" with PDFs.

Since it seems that the 538 firmware is a fix for a number of problems, why isn't it more readily available? I hate having a course of action to follow and having to twiddle my thumbs for someone else to get around to helping me. I think I'm in withdrawal.....
I suppose I should have made a backup of the cybook service file before I tried to upgrade; I just didn't think of it. Too trusting, I guess.

Anyone who's completely dedicated to PDF *should* have Acrobat Pro - damn the cost. Me, I run across too many PDF ebooks to *not* have APro. Sometimes the added features of an application *do* warrant the added expense.
