An embarrassment of riches, truly. Baen was generous to offer these, a few years ago. And some of these books are now unavailable (except as used paperbacks). So it's very nice to be able to find them.
Most of the CDs are organized as websites, with a top level index that organizes the content.
If you extract the entire CD to a single folder and point a browser to it you'll see what a nice job the BAEN folks did with them.

It was the old (origin before 1999) extension that was used by personal assistants for ebooks and other purposes. Compare .pdb

Yes, they are thorough and well-organized. If only other publishers could be so customer-friendly.

Ah, brilliant! Now I know which CD to use for a particular title!

Thanks again!

TO ISSY Bird

Issybird, thanks for your helpful response, however contrary to what you wrote that "Rebecca.1960 has not been online since my question so that must mean I wanted a RANT instead of solution to my problem" ......
I say what a bunch of rubbish. First off, I read through all the replies and wrote a thread saying thank you to everyone. Secondly, I did get some helpful solutions and many that I've looked into, so I now have some good tips, and no longer need to be on this thread and, more important, when I saw how badly the thread went off topic with nitpicking about how we, here in Canada, write .99 cents, well it was a disappointment. For some silly reason I expected better from a board like this. However, again, I say thank you to all the posters who did help me with links, sites and generally good tips. Merry Christmas all

It's OK to have silly feelings. The important thing is that you state that you have been "help[ed] with links, sites, and generally good tips."

Merry Christmas to you!

I think that's normal for most forums, since they are focused on discussion, so the important thing is how long the thread stays on topic.

Though I do agree that the comment you pointed out was uncalled for. You are new to these forums, rather than a regular poster. We really ought to be more welcoming.

Anyhow, it's good to hear that you found the help you needed and hope you have a good Christmas.

A hopefully helpful suggestion is that when starting a thread you might mention that you'll be monitoring replies but not necessarily posting yourself very often. That seems to go without saying IMO but I don't think it ever hurts to say it-and apparently for some people it helps....

Sigil is your friend there. You can import multiple html files into a blank epub and save it fairly easily.

I know. But converting one of the other formats is far easier and you don't need to install Calibre even

Just use the site

http://convertfiles.com/

Which uses Calibre but without requiring users to know Calibre.

I could hit it. If it is to the left of the target--waaaay left and seemingly out of the way entirely.

Hmmm. Were you in my archery class? I couldn't hit the side of a barn when I was inside it.

My class was during the summer at Boy Scout camp. Many, many moons ago. The real problem isn't finding sites where you can get free ebooks but in determining if said ebooks are legal or not. There are many places that have illegal ones in comparison to the legal sites. It's easy to post about a site you've found somewhere only to find out later that it's a pirate site. It's happened to me in the past.
