If the glo has the option to disable the database, and just use directories instead, plus buttons to turn the pages, I would consider it to be near-perfect.

Sounds like you would enjoy the Bookeen Cybook Odyssey HD Frontlight. Here is a review by another MR member. I still prefer the Glo because the bezel is slimmer and it is easier to hold in one hand. The buttons of the Odyssey are nice, though they work best if you sit or stand (the pressure points are on the front).

I've been looking at the Cybook for awhile. One thing in that article you linked, is it true you can't search for words within books? That would be a definite drawback for me.

I'm patiently waiting to buy this, in red. I'll probably wait closer to the holidays and see if there is a sale. I don't mind not having the built in light and the resolution will be a big upgrade from my PRS 505 and T1.

I've got plenty of other readers and tablets, but I love the stability of the Sony software.

I returned mine after a few days because of some drawbacks compared to my PW. Firmware upgrades may have fixed some of the issues (don't recall what they were, but I wrote a post about it in the Cybook forum), so I would definitely read up on user feedback before buying one, if I were you.

I have considered the Odyssey HD Frontlight. Does anyone know how low the minimum frontlight strength is compared to the glo? I find the glo too bright at the lowest setting for reading in a dark room.

Same here, although I love reading on my Kobo Aura, when it comes to proofreading and note taking, the Sony T1 is my go to reader.

To be honest, although I really like the light on the Kobo for when lighting conditions are dim, I'm not that fond of it in complete darkness, at the level it doesn't bother my eyes there is not quite enough contrast. I prefer the Sony lighted cover in complete dark conditions and can read much longer using it than with the Kobo's integrated light.

So, I will probably buy one, in white, but will wait for a sale.

What about the resolution? Even the new Kobo will have the same resolution:

Have you any Information about another new reader with a higher resolution?

A little dimmer, but not by much. Both seem relatively bright when you read in a completely dark room. What helped me a little on the Glo was to pick a "fatter" font, like Minion Pro. The Cybook also has a night mode (black background, grey text).

Thanks, even a little dimmer is some improvement. How does the light quality (evenness) compare overall?

Interesting comment ! If many people feel that way, then it justifies Sony's strategy regarding light.

I really don't understand why people still talk about this useless light when there's a question that's much more important:

Will Sony make the red and white Reader glossy again?

Actually, that link just says "possibly". That's not much of a confirmation.
