The touch version: $99/$139 (depending on the ads). It is one of the features I am intrigued by. Does your wife use automatic text reading, or the audiobooks read by real people?

I now own a Kindle 3G with keyboard. Current "new" Kindles mean I'll stay with the one I have. I only hope they don't stop making Kindles with keyboards so that I can have an acceptable option when my current one retires.

Based on my needs, the best option for next generation Kindles would be a port to connect to "keyboard cases", like in the Ipads. Maybe there's an Amazon engineer reading this thread who will listen to my voice...

The Special Offers ad banner seems pretty unobtrusive as these things go...I don't think that would really bother me.
The dark graphite color of the KSO is quite sharp.

Don't know anything about the cracks and haven't seen any signs on mine.

The ads really aren't a problem and can easily be avoided. I love the offers and have saved quite a bit of money from my KSO.

I strongly recommend the keyboard version (it's the one I own) between the two. The extra features gained are more than worth the $20 price difference.

The K-Fire does have a USB port. So hopefully this means we can dock USB memory sticks to load up movies, music, etc. Maybe not as form-friendly as a microSD card, but small USB memory is out there.

The Touch and Keyboard versions. Avoid the Button version; it has no MP3 Player.

Some more detail on the Fire:

Quote:
Amazon’s new 7-inch, $199 Kindle Fire tablet technically runs on Android, but it’s not the user experience you might expect — rather than the typical array of user-configurable homescreens, the main interface is a handsome rotating bookshelf where you store your virtual books, magazines, CDs and apps all together. By default, your most recently accessed items will appear on top, though you can also pin items to a “favorites shelf.” There are also an array of distinct tabs labeled Newsstand, Books, Music, Video, Docs, Apps and Web, each of which play to Amazon’s content strengths.

It has web-based, POP and IMP email too.

I'm hoping that there will be Notes and Podcaster apps in the Amazon App store. The wife's Christmas is looking better and better

Only if it can act as a USB host, and not just a client. Can it?

I'd be surprised if Amazon left that hole open.

What's the business case again for Amazon allowing the easy loading of non-Amazon content on an Amazon branded tablet. Oh yeah, NONE....

If I preorder now, do they verify that I have not changed my mind when the time comes? Or can the order be withdrawn before shipment?
Thanx,

I doubt it. USB OTG (On-The-Go) will be introduced in Android Ice Cream Sandwich.

Thanx,
They don't verify your order, but you can always cancel it before it ships.

Which is why I think I will get in line for a Touch 3G and a Fire.

Matter of fact, I just ordered a 3G Touch and a Fire.

BIg write up on Jeff Bezos , discussing Amazon's business strategy. The lede:

Quote:
Jeff Bezos is channeling Steve Jobs. It’s mid-September and the wiry billionaire founder of Amazon.com (AMZN) is at his brand new corporate headquarters in Seattle, in a building named “Day One South” after his conviction that 17-year-old Amazon is still in its infancy. Almost giddy with excitement, Bezos retrieves one by one the new crop of dirt-cheap Kindle e-readers—they start at $79—from a hidden perch on a chair tucked into a conference room table. When he’s done showing them off, he stands up, and, for an audience of a single journalist, announces, “Now, I’ve got one more thing to show you.” He waits a half-beat to make sure the reference to Jobs’ famous line from Apple (AAPL) presentations hasn’t been missed, then gives his notorious barking laugh. With that, Bezos pulls out the Kindle Fire, Amazon’s long-anticipated tablet computer—and the first credible response to the Apple iPad.
