Well hang on a second, lets look at this from a few different angles. As mentioned before, epub only came out a month or two before the Kindle, so to develop a solid and reliable device Amazon could not have adopted the epub format in that time.

Secondly, Amazon own mobi and can develop it into a format best suited to its business model and distribution. No business wishes to throw away their investment and adopt a method/practice which any competitor can latch onto.

People complaining about the Kindle not opening epubs is like Android owners complaining about not being able to run Apple itunes apps.

I don't mean to say Amazon will stop selling mobi but I think it will bring epubs to sell to other eink devices.

Sure...why would any other software company want to write an app that works on Microsoft Windows, for example?

In case the facetiousness was too subtle: supporting standards is a Good Thing, in most cases, for both business and customer.
Amazon probably made a sound decision go with Mobi from the outset. (It certainly hasn't hampered my enjoyment of the Kindle)
It would also be a sound decision to add ePub support now.

Does that mean people with Nooks will be able to buy books from Amazon? Will Amazon offer their books in multiple formats compatable with any reader?

To make that happen Amazon would have to pay Adobe's DRM fees, and I just can't see Jeff Bezo doing that. But, who knows, maybe.

Are you sure? Positive?

Adobe's DRM requires one software component on the destination device, and a second component (and probably a third, fourth and fifth) on the server. But suppose Amazon wrote equivalent server components from scratch, using the same clean room techniques that Phoenix used to clone IBM's BIOS, and that Wine and ReactOS are using to clone Windows.

I'll bet they could get away with offering Adobe-clone DRM-corrupted books for sale without paying any fees.

I'm ambivalent about whether I want that though. It would be great to be able to buy books at Amazon again. But I would fear it would hasten their coming monopoly.

Yes, I'm sure. While it might be technically feasible to reverse engineer Adobe's DRM server, I think there's absolutely no chance Amazon would do so. First, they'd be sued by Adobe before the bits were even dry. Also, while I'm no expert, I suspect that circumventing the DRM in this manner is a violation of the DMCA.

No, no, no! They would NOT be circumventing DRM. They would be selling their own, rebranded version of DRM. That would not in any way violate the DMCA.

But you may be right about Amazon not wanting to do it. So far they seem to be unwilling to acknowledge the existence of competing devices to their beloved Kindle.

And as for being sued, the clean room link I provided mentioned legal presedence.

Who really thinks Amazon will sell ePub? I don't think they will. I think Amazon is just going to allow ePub uploads to be converted to Mobipocket.

Also, I haven't checked, but I'm certain that Adobe's DRM methods are patented. Even if Amazon were able to do a clean room implementation of the software, Adobe could still claim violation of their software patents.

Software patents are a very slippery and controversial thing. They could easily argue that the customer paid for a device to read books and they are a book seller. It is the customer that is using the device as it was intended. The software they write from scratch on their servers is their own, not copied.

There are lots of similar examples around.

If enough of us wish really hard it will come true!

Amazon doesn't have to sell them, but I would like epub support to be unlocked or patched in, or whatever needs to be done to display epubs. It's not technical problem, more like business ridiculousness.

What proportion of the markets that Amazon sell to is represented by non-Kindle eInk devices? Is that proportion growing or shrinking, in comparison to Kindles, iThings, Android devices, and so on? In short, is this a market worth a lot of effort to compete in?
