Sorry if I am being dumb, but what do you mean by keys?

I just want to run my device as normal, but with my customers screensavers.

So should I leave that file in place?

Thanks again

Try not to overly worry about it. As near as I can tell, Amazon isn't scrutinizing returned Kindles for jailbreaks/hacks. I think the only circumstance where one would have an issue is if a failed hack is the cause of the problem, and even then, I suspect Amazon still would simply send you another Kindle with no questions asked. Right now, I suspect the hacking community is so small compared to the total number of Kindles sold, that it isn't worth it to them to waste time inspecting returned Kindles for hacks.

Yes just install the jailbreak and leave the files as is. The keys are the signing keys for the files so you dont have to do anything with them.

Ok, so maybe I'm crazy but I don't want to load 3.1 onto my Kindle. (I want to keep the location numbers displayed all the time.)

If I load this jailbreak and set it to HACKS_UPDATE, will that prevent 3.1 from being loaded onto my Kindle? I'm currently at 3.0.3 and have no other hacks installed.

Yes it will prevent 3.1 from updating your device. Hacks_update does have anther key and thus the original Amazon Firmware is rejected. Only hacks can be installed then.

I don't think so.
All the keys are there in /etc/uks/ and all have .pem extension. That's sufficient on fw 3.0.x to be accepted as valid keys.
It's different on fw 3.1, where only keys with two fixed names are taken into consideration but the rules on 3.0.x are less strict.

Thanks again Hollow Man, my kindle has been behaving herself very nicely today, even though she hates those creepy screen savers!

Some of the original savers are ok, but I do like customizing, so I jailbroke my own one week old Kindle last night. Works great so far. My wife's Kindle 2 still has the older jailbreak on it, and is also fine. She looked at those stock savers for 8 months and couldn't take it anymore!

OK, thanks!

So if I ever wanted to remove these hacks, I would need to uninstall the Screensaver hack, then delete the "ENABLE_HACKS_UPDATE" file, then run the Jailbreak uninstall?

Another question - if I mount my device in Windows, should I be able to view system files?

I currently have:

<.active-content-data>
<.Trash-1000>
<audible>
<documents>
<linkss>
<music>
ENABLE_HACK_UPDATES
metadata.calibre

(<> are folders).

Thanks

Stew

You must enable your Windows PC to show hidden files.
