I have a skin, so I don't really know much about the buttons wearing down.

But, I am concerned that since the K3 is out, they're going to stop making improvements to K2.

Judging by some of the "improvements" I've seen... I'll be happy to see updates stop for my K2! They're bound to break something I like, otherwise.

More font options and new screensavers or custom screensavers. One of the things I loved about the kobo was seeing the cover of the book i was reading when i turned it off. of course that was about the only thing i loved about the kobo.

Page turn toggles should be about half an inch higher up the sides. They are too low and the reader feels unbalanced when I hold it with my thumb over the toggle.

Memory card slot

User screensavers (as part of the firmware not an app or a hack)

Color (when the technology warrants it - hopefully color would actually provide a "whiter" background)

Faster page turns without flicker (how about setting up one screen ahead in memory so it be popped to be the new screen when you page forward and the next screen gets set up - it that possible with eink?)

Screen count (on screen X of total screens)

Improved bookstore when viewed from the Kindle itself

The problem isn't really the computing of the new display, rather it's the need to 'wait' for the screen to settle. Do it too quickly and you'll end up with a lot of dots/locations not quite correct (it already does this occasionally with the current page turning).

To combat the problem you need to make an eInk screen with a faster transition/settling time.

As a side note, there's the recent video-playing clip going around on eInk, that's actually easier to deal with than blanking to white, because any regions that don't quite transition properly will be pushed along by the next update.

1. I want collections to be like folders so that all books can be filed nicely in a collection and you only have to look at collections rather than a mix of collections and ebook titles mixed together. I like that a book can be in multiple collections so if my 'folder' style could be adopted I would happily accept a short-cut style arrangement like my PC is capable of.

2. Sub-collections / folders as many other people have said.

3. I would like to customise my buttons so that I could change what they do, sort of like you can with your PC mouse. I would then change the buttons on the left hand side so that the big button was page-back and the top button was page-forward.

1. Subcollections, which I'm pretty sure is a mainstream want. I'm an organizing freeeeak.

2. Some sort of a notepad feature. Did I mention I'm an organizing freeeeak? I like making lists. I'm not talking like a word processing program. Just a simple notepad program type dealio where I could throw in something right quick, on the fly, for later. Sooo useful.

3. Ok, ok. I know. This is going to make everyone roll their eyes. I bought the Kindle because I did not need library ebooks. My library doesn't even have ebooks, it's a dinky little ol' thing, and I still rent paperbacks anyway. But it'd be nice to have that feature for in the future if I'm ever in a situation where it would be useful to me.

Hmmm... That's really it, I think. (:

Unless I'm reading Vulcan Love Slave, in which case Emily Dickinson is fine, thanks.

Add in QA, support and documentation costs. The hacks don't have any of that.

I can see people complaining because it doesn't work properly as they've dumped their entire unresized photo collection in there or the files aren't the correct ratio so they're not full screen etc...

Couldn't Amazon just offer downloadable options for the screensavers? Or let you put them through the document server.

I miss having the number buttons on the top row. Sure I could hold down the alt button, but a button fan is a button fan.

It does seem like there's room for the number buttons, so I'm not sure why those weren't included on the K3. That would be nice.

Also, I'd like to have a brief book description download with the book. I have so many books on my Kindle that after a while I forget what the book was about, which makes my next-to-read decisions more confusing.

that was the entire reason Amazon went to inwardly activating buttons on the K2/DX versions. The original Kindle had even larger buttons on the sides that activated toward the outer edge, the K2/DX changed to buttons which activated with inward presses. This pretty much eliminated the whole accidental page changes while holding the reader. In fact the reason I never grabbed a K3 was because of this change, I know how I hold the reader and no way just making those buttons smaller but now again activating on outward presses will make it any better than my old K1. So if this is an issue for you, I suggest considering finding a K2/K2i because it's all but a non-issue. I don't see them ever spending their precious system RAM (where the device's embedded code and firmware lives) on the code to customize the side buttons in any way, unfortunately.

Now since I am betting the K4 is going to have a touch screen, I mean Amazon did buy that small touch screen company last year for just this purpose. Well, I am assuming that was why they bought the company anyway. but once this comes the side buttons might go away. That is unless the touch screen can be turned off to conserve power. Either way I also suspect we might see a return of the K2 style button activation when pressed in an inward fashion.
