my favorite opening line of a book, all time was the opening of Stephen Kings "The Gunslinger"

"The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed."

the mans not always the best writer, but man, what an opening. streamlined, sets the plot of the book immediately and grabs your attention.

That's a wonderful line.

I admire Stephen King, especially for his story-telling skills.

Did you know he won an O. Henry Award for Best Short Story of the year (a few years ago)?

Thank yor for reminding me of just how good he can often be.

Don

I finished to read The Dark Tower series about a month ago. Almost one year journey for me. After I have read the first 4 books, I took a small respite and read a few light fantasy books then re-read The Gunslinger and liked it a lot more, then back to DT series books 5 and 6, then Salem's Lot and Hearts in Atlantis and finally DT book 7. Superb.

"Here I pause. If you wish to walk no farther with me, reader, I cannot blame you. It is no easy road." --Gene Wolfe, Volume One in Book of the New Sun.

By itself it doesn't seem that amazing, but wow, when I got to that part of the book when I was a teenager, I practically ran to the bookstore to find Volume Two. Gene Wolfe is one of my favorite authors. Not exactly "light reading" though...

Oh and my favorite sentence in recent memory:

"It was winter - that is, about the second week in November - and great gusts were rattling at the windows, and wailing and thundering among our tall trees and ivied chimneys - a very dark night, and a very cheerful fire blazing, a pleasant mixture of good round coal and spluttering dry wood, in a genuine old fireplace, in a sombre old room."

Many thanks go to Dr. Drib for posting Uncle Silas by Sheridan Le Fanu and introducing me that gem of a sentence.

When I show off my reader to interested parties, I always have that page bookmarked and have them read it. Works everytime! They either want my reader or the name of the book. Usually both.
