Screwballl,
I am not sure where you live. Your location says NWFL so I assume that means Florida? I think Florida residents can apply online with Alachua County Library for a free library card. You don't have to make a trip. Their Overdrive selection for eBooks and audiobooks is pretty decent. http://www.aclib.us/books/media?cat_id=00021#dblist |

One thing that might change with e-readers going mainstream. People that have no tech knowledge. When faced with format problem, tech savvy people get rid of drm / convert, and shut up. But the average user, will go fill a complain to support to get help. Or get caught in buying format not readable by their reader, and complain some more. That, hopefully, will lead to some response. |

I've had numerous e-readers.. The first one supported .epub, because it was recommended here. I had trouble with ADE from the word 'go'... I wanted .epub, because the books I wanted only were in that format... Now they are all available for the kindle, anyway.
Then I bought my Kindle2i - never had any problems (apart from geo restrictions, which applies to any book from that publisher). I had dealt with Amazon before, and found them really good, fast to ship and a great customer service. Buying ebooks from Amazon is just one-click, and it's on your reader... Because of all the talk of epub, I bought over a period of time a few, dedicated to that format.... Still had problems with ADE, and ended up selling them... Then Sony 650 came out on special, and I just had to have it... Still had problems with ADE, but learned to strip the DRM... I haven't read ONE book on the Sony, yet... Amazon's marketing is smart... They don't get their bread and butter from selling Kindles, but from selling books... ![]() |

I never bought a reader because "it supports epub"... As a matter of fact, I bought my first dedicated reader (of the new batch) because it supported mobi... (my first dedicated reader is from a time where nobody knew the word epub yet and rocketbook and mobipocket were the buzz words...). And on my Sony I've not yet read one epub, as I'll reformat them to pdf ![]() |

Then why don't they want to sell books to people like me who've bought other e-readers? They have Kindle apps for phone and computers, sure, but not for any other dedicated e-reader. If they want to sell e-books, why not? Or, conversely why don't they sell epub books? I think they're being shortsighted--they're assuming that the same strategy that made them a behemoth will keep them one. |

I just don't see why Amazon WOULD sell epub? They have their own nice little scheme running, across multiple platforms, and it is easy. They'd have to make deals with ADE and such and we [the consumer] would probably see another form of epub drm and the already murky ebook waters would just get even more stirred up.
I've installed k4pc for any amazon book I want. |

The reason Amazon won't support ePub is that they have no interest in (and derive no benefit from) people reading other vendors' e-books on Kindles. The Kindle is about selling Amazon e-books. Amazon would rather sell more e-books than more Kindles, if they have to choose between the two. If the other readers start outnumbering Kindles in the marketplace (which I don't think will happen anytime soon), then Amazon will probably sell ePub e-books. They'll be happy to have other vendors' devices accept Kindle e-books, but they're not going to put themselves in the position of Amazon helping other companies sell their own e-books.

It seems to me that to use ADE, Amazon would have to either get a special interface from Adobe, or do some fancy manipulation behind the scenes, in order to make the licensing work without having to download to a computer first, and to keep the way licenses work (e.g. remove from one Kindle, and it frees up that license).
One of the selling points of a Kindle is that you don't have to have a computer to use it. |

There is also the web-based reader they are working on (like the google books thing). Presumably that would work on any e-reader that has internet access and a web browser. |

how do you convince Amazon? Let them know you want it, demand it. Start a following.
though that may be tough, kindle owners tend to be yes men don't want to upset the company or something like that. ![]() |

Of course they want other vendors to accept Kindle books. That's why they have Kindle apps for Android, iOS, and just about every other platform you can think of (other than Palm's WebOS, which might be remedied soon, since Rubenstein is on Amazon's board now). In fact, it wouldn't surprise me a bit if Kindle's Nook Color eventually had a Kindle app (at least, in its rooted version). The reason you don't see Kindle apps for the Nook and Sony reader is because those companies don't want people to read Amazon's e-books on their readers, any more than Amazon wants people reading books from other vendors on their Kindles.
