Nook Color customers are not programmers, they come in wanting a new "toy." I sell them all the time and I have not had one person who asked about further development capability say they were comfortable bricking it. It's not like I'm telling them not to, I ask them if they know how to do it and they say no. And I also don't pass along misinformation as opinion. You didn't cite any examples of me doing so, just attacked me for saying there's a risk of bricking. |

MISINFORMATION: "telling someone they have to do a bunch of complicated work that could brick the device" "Bunch of complicated work" is your opinion. "Could brick the device" but is highly unlikely because the NOOKcolor is virtually unbrickable. There's a fail safe that allows you to return to factory defaults. Sorry, but there is a difference between "complicated" and "detailed and exact". If you (and others) want to be lazy in your choice of words that your prerogative. Oh, and if you knew me (and my posts) you would know that I don't pick fights. Last edited by SCION; 12-14-2010 at 12:03 AM. |

Now that we have a full fledged fight .. rooting is usually an extremely simple and easily reversible process. So you could just un-root before a firmware upgrade and re-root afterwards. The chances of something going wrong are extremely small and even then the device can still be brought back to life -- though that will be a lot more complicated than rooting. But yes, I can imagine that many casual users of Android devices imagine it to be a complicated feat that can be accomplished only by the most advanced hackers. A myth usually perpetuated on purpose by the device sellers to keep people from trying.
To root a device all it takes is a little interest in technology and the willingness to read up on a few forums. Or a friend who can do it for you. Still my guess is that the vast majority of people won't bother trying and/or don't feel any need to do so. Last edited by HansTWN; 12-14-2010 at 12:40 AM. |

Especially at B&N prices. Many magazines cost more from B&N than they do straight from the publisher or Zinio. I find that outrageous. One of the reasons I bought the NC was to read magazines, but I'll be danged if I'm going to pay B&N $24 for a $15 Nat Geo subscription.

I too see the NC as a toy because that is the only way I would use it. I can't fit it in a pocket, so it wouldn't be an option for me to use it as a replacement for my T/X (PIM, MP3, Video). I could carry it in my briefcase, but I already carry my netbook, which was the same price as the NC and has more functionality. I feel the same way about the Ipad. To me it's just a more expensive toy.
YMMV but for me I wouldn't get any serious use out of it. If someone came to me and said they wanted an ereader, I'd point them to the nook every time. |

I assumed the primary reason people buy eReaders is for convenience. Unless many are under the impression that ebooks are significantly cheaper than paperbacks. With the new pricing models saving money is no longer the norm.

My ebooks are always cheaper than their paperback versions, since I only get PD and free ebooks.

![]() It is really convenient to hold hundreds or even thousands of books such small devices like today's readers. Besides being able to carry on your whole book collection with you, I also find more comfortable, on my case, reading a 1200 pages MS-SQL or Oracle book with my ereader, instead of holding the real book on my hands. Price can be the reason for getting some ebooks, but would be interesting to know if that's more important or not than just the convenience factor. I think it is personal preference as well. |
