Nope, not sick or tired of them at all. In fact, I read all four books and I've seen three movies. Nothing's wrong with a little getaway. After all, they are called "fantasy" novels for a reason. To each his own y'all!

These romantic novels sort of remind me of carl jung's concepts of the anima and the animus, two imprinted archetypes of the conceptional of masculinity to a woman and femininity to a man. we see this in romantic vampire archetypes, as it were. the more we deviate from our primordial images, we try to amputate our psychic organs and this creates conflict. perhaps, we have to admit to ourselves our desires for dangerous romance.

So if I think hack writing is bad, or I think stalkers are creepy, I "really" secretly want "dangerous romance"? I can't buy that. Aside from being fairly sure of what I think is good writing, I don't need the secrecy. Yesterday I was in a store looking for the SF section, and they had three bookcases of SF versus an entire room of romance, plus more spilling out of there. If I wanted romance, dangerous or otherwise, there were plenty of books that could supply it.
I think it has more to do with bad writing and creepy old men than it does with psychic organs and hidden conflicts. |

After following this thread, I think there are two things cropping up.
One, that many people think the market is oversaturated with YA vampire romances; and two, that many people think that the most popular such series is not particularly well-written, and has a really creepy take on romantic love and relationships. Personally, while the romance take on vampires is very much not to my taste, I don't think the market is oversaturated. They're selling, so there must be a demand. Besides, market oversaturation is self-correcting; so that's only an issue in the short term. As a writer and a parent, I really do have issues with that one series. Not enough to keep the kids from reading them, but issues none the less. I don't like the series at all, but it's popularity doesn't mean the market is oversaturated: It simply means that despite the flaws in the books, the author managed to hit something that really resonates with a lot of readers, and so the books have become very popular. Besides, my teenage stepdaughter who reads those books voraciously also happens to think most of what I like to read is stupid. I disagree with her, but that's her prerogative. |

.....and if you look at the traditional romance market there is (correct me if I'm wrong ladies
![]() I'd think the vampire take on it is just a small extension to that....so likely strikes the same chord in readers.... |

So as far as I am concerned the Twilight series worked for her. She is a keen reader of fantasy novels now. She hated reading the classics for English at high school. Struggled with them would be a better description. Never finished them either. |

Seriously. I used to think of those romance novels where the female was trapped... on a ship, in a castle, in a cabin, by an aggressive but good looking male lead as soft-B&D. The kind of thing that sounds better in a story than it would in real life.
