Maybe I need to be a native speaker to understand. My set of English language mistakes must be quite different

My issue with it is that I (as was mentioned above) get too fast with the fingers and it is just a small passing thought in the meaning of the sentence.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

I'm constantly finding errors in posts I've made; usually days after everyone has had a chance to see them. When I do, I correct the post; even if it's already been quoted. You never can tell, someone may yet read them who doesn't yet know I'm an idiot!

The problem a lot have with 'its' and 'it's' is they are usesd to thinking of 's at the end signifying possession. With its and it's it is just the opposite.

As for there and their, I always point out to my students that 'here' is part of where and there, so all signify place. That took care of the where, were problem, too. Well, I at least tried to take care of the problem, they didn't always listen.

It's an unfortunate "coincidence" that "it's" is a common contraction in English. Were it not so, the fact that no possessive pronoun has an apostrophe would probably mean that people would be no more tempted to put an apostrophe in the word "its" than they would in the related word "his".

Oh, gosh, me, too. I could never leave an error in a post after I spotted it, no matter how small or inconsequential, or how old the thread was! Sadly anal-retentive, I'm afraid. (Uh, referring to myself, of course, not you...)

I did that too, with here and there and where. I think part of the issue is that they just didn't want to think while writing. It is a lot of work to think and write at the same time, especially with limited English reading/writing experience (language immersion school, English not introduced until 5th grade). Of course, if they didn't know or understand the rules, the editing step was painful for us all.

Thanks for clearing that up, but I'm not sure others who know me will disagree!

My fingers are also too fast... and, I suppose, in a habit, so I tend to put an apostrophe where it definitely doesn't belong... When I write a word like don't, the apostrophe automatically goes in, and so it does in all other words ending in 'ont', such as front - if I don't think, it ends up like 'fron't..
