The Bookseller is the first in the Hugo Marston series by Mark Pryor. It has dropped to $2.99 at Kindle US.

link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00C4B2LRI

Spoiler:
Quote:
Who is killing the celebrated bouquinistes of Paris?

Max—an elderly Paris bookstall owner—is abducted at gunpoint. His friend, Hugo Marston, head of security at the US embassy, looks on helplessly, powerless to do anything to stop the kidnapper. Marston launches a search, enlisting the help of semiretired CIA agent Tom Green. Their investigation reveals that Max was a Holocaust survivor and later became a Nazi hunter. Is his disappearance somehow tied to his grim history, or even to the mysterious old books he sold?

On the streets of Paris, tensions are rising as rival drug gangs engage in violent turf wars. Before long, other booksellers start to disappear, their bodies found floating in the Seine. Though the police are not interested in his opinion, Marston is convinced the hostilities have something to do with the murders of these bouquinistes. Then he himself becomes a target of the unknown assassins.

With Tom by his side, Marston finally puts the pieces of the puzzle together, connecting the past with the present and leading the two men, quite literally, to the enemy's lair. Just as the killer intended.

The Gold Deadline is the second in the Alexander Gold series by Herbert Resnicow. It is a US Kindle Countdown deal at $0.99 for about 4 more days.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Gold-Deadline.../dp/B01KA3VBQ8

Spoiler:
Quote:
The clock is ticking…

A lovely night at the Boguslav Ballet was supposed to be a relaxing evening out for Norma Gold and her brilliant, if somewhat eccentric husband, Alexander...

Instead the evening was pure murder.

It was the kind of case only Gold’s genius could solve.

In the next box, the notoriously nasty impresario Viktor Boguslav, the ballet’s owner, was viciously stabbed during the show.

The box’s door was locked, the seats could be seen by hundreds of spectators, and Boguslav never uttered a sound.

The only other person in the box was billionaire Max Baron’s son, Jeffrey.

Desperate to protect his son, Max promises Alexander Gold one million dollars if he can clear Jeffrey of the murder in thirty-six hours, before the ballet troupe leaves town.

But can Gold pull off the seemingly impossible and solve the murder in such a short space of time?

The Gold Deadline is an engaging murder mystery full of twists and turns to keep you guessing until the very end.

Dead Ahead, apa Deadly Daffodils, is the first in the Superintendent Cawthorn series by Roger Silverwood. It's a US Kindle Countdown deal at $0.99 for about six more days.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Dead-Ahead-Ro.../dp/B014LDUCXG

Spoiler:
Quote:
Robert Mackie, the thirty-five year old Managing Director of a leading toy factory in Yorkshire, takes a holiday in the quaint Cornish fishing village of Candlecombe planning to sort out his private life.

But, when he sees somebody throw a dead body over the sea cliff, he finds himself plunged into mystery and murder.

He quickly reports what he has seen to the police, but when they investigate, the body has disappeared.

And in its place is one of the dolls belonging to Mackie’s company…

Mackie himself is now a suspect, and though the police soon let him go, it seems someone else is on his case.

He is sure he is being followed, and he narrowly misses being hit by a speeding grey car.

The strangest clues pile one upon another and the questionable behaviour of Detective Superintendent Cawthorne complicates and adds to the suspense.

Mackie, not trusting the inspector’s motives, and fearful for his life, decides to use his own methods to try to solve the mystery and unmask the murderer.

But who will arrive at the truth first…?

Dead Ahead’ was previously published as ‘Deadly Daffodils’.

Contract Killer, apa Fish Story, is the fourth in the John Denson series by Richard Hoyt. It's a US Kindle Countdown deal at $0.99 for about the next five more days.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Contract-Kill.../dp/B00ZCBVKGA

Spoiler:
Quote:
Private Eye John Denson is approached by his darts-throwing Cowlitz Indian buddy, Willie Prettybird, with an interesting case.

The Cowlitz claim to Native American salmon fishing rights is being challenged by the state.

Apparently a contract was never signed, and so they have no claim to the land.

The Native Americans are, of course, disputing this.

And it seemed as if the judge was going to rule in their favour.

But then he mysteriously went missing.

And now the new judge, notoriously against the Native Americans, has taken over.

Willie is desperate for John to try and find the judge before the ruling goes ahead.

But when dismembered body parts show up in Seattle's Pioneer Square, it is looking unlikely that he will find him alive.

Was the judged killed because of the dispute over the contract?

Is anyone else in danger?

Could his friend Willie be implicated?

John Denson must get to the bottom of the mystery before it is too late….

Contract Killer’ is a dark murder mystery with a masterful plot that will keep you reading until the final page. It was previously published as ‘Fish Story’.

The Girl of His Dreams is the 17th in Donna Leon's excellent (IMO) Guido Brunetti series. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US.

link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0097DHRJS

Spoiler:
Quote:
Donna Leon’s Commissario Guido Brunetti mysteries have won legions of fans for their evocative portraits of Venetian life. In her novels, food, family, art, history, and local politics play as central a role as an unsolved crime. In The Girl of His Dreams when a friend of Brunetti’s brother, a priest recently returned from years of missionary work, calls with a request, Brunetti suspects the man’s motives. A new, American-style Protestant sect has begun to meet in the city, and it’s possible the priest is merely apprehensive of the competition. But the preacher could also be fleecing his growing flock, so Brunetti and Paola, along with Inspector Vianello and his wife, go undercover.

But the investigation has to be put aside when, one cold and rainy morning, a body is found floating in a canal. It is a child, a gypsy girl. Brunetti suspects she fell off a nearby roof while fleeing an apartment she had robbed. He has to inform the distrustful parents, encamped on the mainland, and soon finds himself haunted by the crime--and the girl. Thought-provoking, eye-opening, and profoundly moving, The Girl of His Dreams is classic Donna Leon, a spectacular, heart-wrenching addition to the series.

This appears to be a self-published book, Mort. Has it previously been commercially published, or are you personally recommending it?

It appears as if it was FIRST published by Berkley, but that this title may have reverted back to her, and that she published it.

The hardback shows Berkley, while the paperback shows nothing except that she is the copyright holder. It appears to be privately published as an ebook.

I think that most of us know and understand the rules of this thread about self-pub, and usually a tiny bit of investigation on the part of the challenger could resolve the issue without the need for a challenge. It only takes a couple of clicks to click on the "paperback" or "hardcover" tabs on Amazon to show an original publisher, or to look at SYKM, which is pretty picky about what books they list.

And, as Dr. Drib mentions above, it is not uncommon for the rights to older backlist titles to have reverted, and then been republished by the author themselves, so the absence of a publisher in Amazon is FAR from definitive.

Although it may not matter, since I'm not a moderator, I'd much prefer to have this be a friendly thread where it is assumed that posters know and abide by the rules, so there is some responsibility to do at least some basic checking before challenging, rather than the opposite.
