i paid extra to have the extended 5-year guarantee for my washing machine. during the 5 years i had one or two minor troubles not necessitating an intervention (mainly troubles with wires coming out of bras and getting stuck in various places, including the filter. note to all the ladies : best to get some sort of closed washing bag for your lingerie, because the bra wires will play havoc with the washing machine).
the guarantee expired on 3 october 2008, one month and 6 days ago. 2 days ago, one of the plastic beater blades from the inside of the drum BROKE OFF while i was doing some washing. it can be replaced, of course, but since the five-year guarantee expired ONE MONTH ago, i'll have to pay for it myself. ![]() |

These machines *are* sentient, you know. They are quite aware, thank you, of when the warrantee expires.

They sit. And they wait. Either that or some git puts in a specially timed destructo-chip (which is what I've always suspected). Anything that breaks before then is just because of a problem with the timer, which is why they give you 'new' refurbed machines instead of just fixing your old one. They need time to dispose of the evidence. |

One more proof that capitalism is an insane society with inverted values:

The thing about it is not that it is not new, it is that it is still going on, despite so many people knowing about it, articles and books written to denounce it.

I think that one of the things that perpetuates industry's ability to continue to be this wasteful is the accelration of unplanned obsolescence. Computers change and upgrade capacity so fast these days that we are starting to actually expect a new phone every year or so. My mother up to about five years ago, was still talking on the cradle and handset phone she had when we moved into our home in 1967! That thing would have never died, if it were not for the switch to digital signal and the loss of analog functionality. We need to be able to slow down sometimes, I think, and hold on to things that can continue to function. Just my $0.02.

I do not agree.
I do not have a cell phone. I think by now maybe half of humanity has been raised by television and is deeply under the influence of PR and advertising (also through TV series, blogs,..). The younger generations' deepest desires have been shaped by marketing. They feel depressed and inferior, as if they and their lives are worthless if they do not own anything new. Their lives have no deep meaning, only products can give them a semblance of meaning. It is clearly pathological. |
