Although no official response. I'm quite certain that I got it right, so I'll just hurry on and post a new one, since I can't keep my eyes open indefinitely (it's 0:50 am here).

This is going to slow.

The movie was probably the best of to come out in 1999, even though american beauty stole the spotlight and Fight club also showed great promise for the movie industry.

But this movie arguably had the best use of music in a movie ever, by Aimee Mann, and Tom Cruise for once actually acted instead of just being... well, Tom Cruise.

The actor on the left is (was) a very famous french actor. He played with Marilyn Monroe in one of her last movies.
The other actor is Jean-Louis Trintignant.

The actor is Yves Montand. I don't know the movie.

Correct! Well, it might be too difficult, especially for non-europeans.
Some more hints:
The director is a greek born (...) french filmmaker. His greatest success (?) outside Europe might be a controversial movie with Jack Lemmon in the early 80's for which he earned a Palme d'or in Cannes.
He also directed movies with Jill Clayburgh, John Travolta and Jessica Lange.
The pics are from a french production. It's one of his first movies, in the late 60's, probably his most known movie in Europe. It's a political thriller about a troubled period of post-war Greek history.

The movie's title is "Z" by Costa Gavras.
His movie with Jack Lemmon is "Missing".
