So if I'm understanding the installation process... I have a legit copy of Windows 7 Pro x64 on my desktop. I can only do an upgrade to Windows 10, correct? There is no way to do a fresh install of Windows 10 under the freebie rules?

And seems there's another bug which would most likely affect me, where too many shortcuts in the start menu is a problem, it seems there's a limit of 512. At least I think it's referring to shortcuts, the use of "apps" for everything lately leaves me wondering at times exactly what is meant.

I believe you should be able to do an upgrade and then a clean re-install.

The upgrade registers your product key *for Win10*, after that the clean install communicates the key baked into the BIOS and MS knows you are allowed to have Win10.

The clean reinstall can also be done by doing a reset set to not keep anything. It should be a quick process. These extra steps may not be necessary, but Microsoft has not specifically stated you can do a clean install as an upgrade so doing the upgrade first is just to be safe. Hopefully they will address this question soon.

Upgraded a truly poor netbook (1GB Ram, Atom N570

)
Lost the mouse pointer after install, but a reboot sorted that out.

Netbook still slow

Hey, Cortana can open apps and do really bad impressions

Slightly faster after a few bootups.
Changing the settings to max performance really speeded it up, actually usable now (and this netbook has never been usable)

I have a really slow netbook. It runs winXP. I'll have to see if it can get the upgrade to win 10. Then maybe someone in the house will use it.

I guess it can't, though.

The free upgrade is for Windows 7 and 8 users only. You can of course buy the upgrade for your XP machine.

I received an email from Microsoft this morning with links to a Windows 10 FAQ page and it addresses this issue:

So the process is upgrade first and then do a clean install if you want one.

Can I ask a question please? I figured you all would know. If my laptop says 'No Pen or Touch Input is available for the display" does that pretty much rule out upgrading to W10. I'm on W7

Good point, I have one of those slow, barely usable netbook too. It's hiding *somewhere* in the flat. I'll try and find it at the weekend and see if it'll upgrade. Nothing to lose

You can upgrade. It works fine with a standard laptop - touchpad or mouse etc (even that silly IBM pointer thingy in the middle of some keyboards

Yes, Windows 10, like Windows 8, can be used either with or without a touchscreen. Personally I dislike using a touchscreen on a laptop or desktop computer - I find it easier to use a mouse.

Does your laptop HAVE a touch screen?
You just don't GAIN a feature you did not have to begin with.

When Color Home Computers first hit the market, they used TV's for displays.

"Color images will be on Color TV's only" had to be added to all sales literature.
B&W sets were still very common and these New Fangled Computers were being returned as defective: 'No Color'

I never expected to GAIN a touchscreen, I just didn't know if it was a requirement as I saw a screen shot of a windows check screen that had a tick next to the 'screen is touch' ready box.

I still would rather buy a new PC than upgrade but I'm really on the fence now as I can't actually afford a new PC.
