one for 99€, and the other one for 94€ because I used my amazon visa and there is the visa promotion going on right now that is usable with the Prime promotion (code VISA2013, gives you 5€), so I think it's a real good deal. One is for my mom's Xmas. Then there are 3 more orders that are not done yet that would be for other family members, but I am still waiting to hear from them. You can order 5 devices for that special offer price.

Meanwhile I used my son's KK (used to be mine) today and I really love it, a pity it's so big because it really has a great display.

They must be defective and would probably fail the pin hole test.
I must have missed the part where anyone has stated that all PW2 screens are defective.

I do not possess your amazing 20/20 vision--i'm nearsighted with an astigmatism--but I can still see a pinhole on my screen without needing reading glasses or magnifying glasses or electron microscopes. Tell you what: I'll take your word that your screen is perfect as far as you can see (which is the only test that matters) if you will take the word of everyone else that their screens are perfects/slightly less than perfect/just ok/not so hot/horrible as far as they can see (which, again, is the only test that matters).

By the way, you keep saying that the 5 star reviews are proof that the PW2 is perfect, but that's a ridiculous claim to make. You further imply that only the 1 star reviews indicate that anyone is even moderately unhappy. What about 2, 3, and 4 star reviews? What about the "it's really more of a 4.8 or 4.9, but I'll just round up to 5" reviews?

5 stars beat all the rest of the reviews COMBINED.

I just went to the Paperwhite 2013 page here:

http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Paperwh...owViewpoints=1

I found that there are now reviews: 54 four star, 27 three star, 14 two star and 17 one star. There are 221 five star reviews. That means the 5 stars beat ALL the rest combined by 1.97 to 1.

That looks great in my estimation. I have purchased 5 Kindles since 2009 and only had to exchange 1 and that new exchange was also perfect.

I used to use Sony eReaders and they simply could not match the Amazon Kindles and their eBook prices tended to be slightly higher than Amazon.

I admitted that my particular eye configuration may not pick up what others do in the way of defects. However, the test is how we like reading on them not how many defects we can discover.

I just went to the Amazon page for the Sony PRS-T2-6. They have 5 four star reviews, 1 three star, 3 two star and 2 one star. They have 14 five star reviews. That means their 5 star reviews have a 1.27 ratio over all other reviews combined.

Their page is here: http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Touchscre...owViewpoints=1

I didn't need to work very hard to "discover" a pinhole on my screen. I opened the cardboard box, looked at the screen, and said, "What's that white spec?" It really wasn't that difficult. If the pinhole was larger or in a less inconspicuous location, I would have exchanged my KW2 for a new one because at that point the problem would have distracted me from my reading.

No one is saying that people who are happy with their devices are wrong for feeling that way. No one is saying that people who do not see any problems with their devices are simply blind to the defects. No one is saying that all PW2 screens have problems. No one is saying that you are wrong for liking your perfect Kindle. No one is saying that I'm wrong for liking my slightly less than perfect Kindle.

WiFi was on, but that shouldn't eat the battery. I always left the WiFi on on my Touch (and all other Kindles I've owned) and they last at least a week or two, usually two, with heavy usage. Basically I'm getting two days of usage before having to recharge. (BTW, I only loaded two books so indexing was not the issue.)

BTW, I believe I can read longer periods with less eyestrain on my iPhone and iPad than on my PW2.
Try restarting the Kindle before recharging it next time. The framework on the PW is buggy like that sometimes and a restart fixes the drain issue. If that doesn't work try a Factory Reset and if that doesn't work it could be defective.

You should get a week with normal use with WiFi on unless there's a bug in the PW2 firmware that we aren't aware of. Might want to start a thread asking about PW2 battery life.

On another note since last firmware update on the PW1 my battery life has significantly increased!

To be honest, I actually think that 66.3% of people willing to give a 5 star rating, is rather low.

(However, we must take into account that many people on the internet are... uh... stupid. They are completely unable to give anything else but 5 stars OR 1 star, and there are those who give a Kindle a 1 star because it can't read EPUB or something similar, which you should have known before you bought it. I assume that there is a law with regard to "Customer is obliged to inform himself before purchasing" in the US/UK; there is in The Netherlands.)

I just bought the Kindle Paperwhite (wifi version) from Best Buy, after finding that ordering it from Amazon would take until the end of this month.

Looking at the screen, I can see the slight improvements, but I wouldn't have bought it for that alone: I was interested mostly in the ability to read Japanese text vertically and use the Japanese dictionary. I'm happy to report that if you load up a Japanese-language text, it automatically downloads a dictionary (as well as looking up terms on Japanese wikipedia), and you can have a Japanese keyboard.

Anyway, re: the screen, comparing it side by side with a Kindle Keyboard, I can see an improved contrast and more of a creamier background white (still greyish though), and I can see the improved DPI when looking at fine details.

I wonder what Amazon will do next year? I would be interested in some point in one that was lighter and thinner (though of course with a similar battery life). I also prefer the sliding button that the Kindle Keyboard had.

@Jack, because of the cover, it is so worth it getting rid of SO: you open the cover and the last page you read is right there, with the light at the last brightness level you used. It sounds so stupid that something so small can be so darn awesome, but it is it's like a real book in a way.

Thanks, xendula! I think that sounds like a good plan.

I just finished reading my first book on the PW2. I was only able to read about one chapter total on the three PW1s I tried--they were that bad. Of course to read this book I had to modify it to have bold text. That is not preferable as you lose things like page numbers and X-Ray when you turn an Amazon "book" into a "personal document" which is what happens when you modify it. But I think the PW2 is a keeper despite the poor fonts/text. I'm hoping the devs come up with a way to allow custom fonts, but I'm not holding my breath!

Good idea. My PW2 is starting to act a little bit wonky anyway. It gets a little page refresh happy at times and occasionally does double page refreshes. It also seems to be slowing down on displaying the dictionary look up window. So it is probably time for a restart.

I've noticed that when I read outside in bright sunlight, my Paperwhite refreshes every page turn. I'm assuming there is some sort of temperature sensor?

Restarting can't hurt if it's being sluggish.

Sounds like it definitely needs a restart. When it gets sluggish like you describe that is the only fix for it.

Definition window a little hard to read

This is a firmware thing with the PW2, but the dictionary definition window is a bit difficult to read at times. The text is sometimes thin and it uses some grey text, rather than black, that makes it even more difficult to read. It is always very difficult to read the pronunciation text.
