You can use a program, such as the free Mp3Tag, to edit the ID info embedded in the file. They have versions for Windows (there's even an old version that works back to Windows 95!) and Mac OSX. It's easy to use.
Renaming the files is a good idea, though. If something happens and the ID data gets wiped, you'll still know what it is. You can always dig up the rest of the info from that. |

Thursday's classical freebie from YourClassical is Frederic Chopin's Etude No. 3, Op.10.
It comes from a Naxos album entitled, The Romantic Chopin - A Celebration of Chopin's Most Romantic Music. The Slovak State Philharmonic Orchestra, Kosice performs the works on the album, along with Idil Biret on the piano on at least some of the pieces. Robert Stankovsky is the conductor. There is lots more information about the entire album on Naxos' dedicated webpage for the album. I encourage you to do some exploring and reading of that webpage and its links. On this dedicated YourClassical webpage for the free piece, you can stream the 4 minute, 34 second piece and/or download it. Downloading this MP3 piece is simply a matter of clicking on the "Direct MP3 download link" on that webpage. Of course, all of you are waiting anxiously to learn my expert opinion of the piece, right? (ha) In all honesty, it doesn't sound much like romantic music to me, especially because of the piano part. If this is part of Chopin's "Most Romantic Music," then I would have to say that he didn't write much of it. |

Thanks for the info. I installed Mp3Tag and it seems that the mp3 files downloaded from the "Direct MP3 download link" on YourClassical webpages do not have tags. Can anyone confirm what I'm seeing?

Yup. You'd have to type in your own tags. All I see is the bitrate, length, etc., not title or orchestra or composer.

1) Downloads from some of the providers have some truly helpful information in their file names. First, I make reference to my post #1136 on this thread, pertaining to Alexander Street giveaways. One of the free movements was Am Rebenstocke blinket jetzt. The downloaded file name is "1. Die Jahreszeiten - Am Rebensctocke blinket jetzt [Joseph Haydn] - 1m0s.mp3". So, I've got the composer's name (Joseph Haydn), the name of the composition (Die Jahreszeiten (The Seasons)), and the name of the movement (Am Rebenstocke blinket jetzt). I might be able to live with no more information than that. I noticed that another provider also had quite a bit of useful data in their file names. 2) YourClassical is not one of the providers that gives much helpful information in their file names--at least in an obvious way. That's unfortunate, since we get more giveaways from them than probably anyone else (remember that some of the providers which don't have daily giveaways, do give more pieces when they do make their giveaways. For example, you can get two complete albums from Naxos each month). However, I've noticed that in the file names there is an 8-digit number. Checking the last few files from YourClassical, I notice that there is the number "2016," followed by four other numbers. Hmmmm . . . could it be the number "2016" indicates the year that the giveaway was made? The odds of it, I would think, are extremely high. I'm going to do some investigation about the last four digits of the 8-digit number and see if they can provide any help (like being a catalog number? That might be too good to ask for. But, if so, there may be some information that we can learn from that). BTW--Koland, on her blog (a really good one, by the way), more or less simultaneously posts the same free piece as YourClassical's, but they come from publicradio.org (there is some kind of arrangement in which YourClassical, publicradio.org, and Minnesota Public Radio, and maybe others, all make a post of the same piece everyday--that's about all that I know about it), instead. I noticed that the file name from publicradio.org is the same as from YourClassical and, if I was a bettin' man (which I'm not), I would bet the farm that you would find the file name for them to be the same, too. I say all of that really to say, if you're aware of this arrangement between the three or more organizations, you probably needn't bother seeing if their file names yield anymore informaton. The downside, if the above pans out, is that I'm going to have to block off on my calendar a couple of weekends to re-label the files, not to mention get them organized. It would have been so much better if I just had been doing this all along, as I got new classical freebies . . . . Gotta go. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 12-01-2016 at 06:35 PM. |

I will try to devote some time to provide some background information for the free pieces GtrsRGr8 highlights here. If you want I can toss some links on here that has a lot of information about classical music so you can learn more about this art form. |
