Thanks for the replies... It sounds like a worthwhile upgrade, although I probably won't mess with it 'til winter-ish. I'm gotten used to hyperbolic claims of magical performance improvements from Adobe with every new version, that never come true and usually cause more resource usage, poorer performance, and generally bizarre problems. So, I'm not real trusting of companies that offer magical productivity improvements and better user interfaces. But, in this case it sounds like something that may not IMPROVE performance but shouldn't cause it to DETERIORATE...
Thanks all... |

(that's what I did, plugged in my USB and ran Setup.exe from it) But I still don't know what/where/how to figure out the Key in case it is needed for a clean install. Also not finding any options to create recovery discs.... |

I ended up uninstalling (not without a battle - had to download a Norton Uninstall Tool) Norton Security Suite (it is free for me from Comcast). Windows Claims it is unneeded because of Windows Defender which is part of Win 10....not sure I trust that though....may try reinstalling Norton again....I think I had to do that on Win 7 and someone on line said they removed and reinstalled and it all worked. (LiveUpdate was not working).

Did an in place upgrade with the media creation tool and made a DVD with the disk image file with no issues aside from an itunes gripe but with the added bonus of getting my DVD player working again.

I downloaded this little utility produkey and it pulled the key from win 10 which is different than what the key for win 7 was. (assuming the tag on the laptop is correct, I've no reason to doubt it)
but anyway I've had enough.....pretty much wasted the whole day on this and it's getting on to bed time. At least I've to Win 10 running on the laptop. It's working pretty well.... |

I may have this wrong, but my understanding is that product keys for older versions of Windows are not valid for installing Windows 10. The free upgrade requires an existing installed and activated copy of Windows 7 or 8.1. The installer upgrades to Windows 10 and sends a snapshot of your hardware configuration to Microsoft. They store that and use it to verify your license during activation if you ever need to do a clean install of Windows 10 on the same PC in the future.
Any other installation of Windows 10 requires a new, paid for, Windows 10 license. It is not transferable to new hardware. |

Thanks. It does appear that the produkey tool will let you read the keys for your MS products and record them if you don't have them recorded or on tags already. The Win 10 Product key it shows after the install does not match the tag for the win7 product key (I wish I'd had/used this tool before starting to know for sure) I guess I'm going to need to download/burn a DVD using the Windows Product Tool.....but tomorrow, tomorrow... |

Just installed Windows 10 on my sister's laptop. Slightly awed at the speed of the upgrade, Microsoft has improved tremendously.
The upgrade went as smooth as butter. Of course, it was a crappy laptop anyway that she plans on returning anyway (so she says)... After a dozen failed attempts to use the `wuauclt.exe /updatenow` trick, I found the media creation tool, which worked. |
