I knew that there must be a reason for using "university" adjectivally with "college," but I didn't know what it was. I was surprised that I had not heard of the University College and the University College Library before, given their prestige. I've learned a lot just from preparation for making posts of books on Mobileread! That's not to mention the enlightening comments that people sometimes make after I've made the posts. One thing that I've learned is what a wealth--numerically and qualitatively--of museums that there are in London. It doesn't seem quite fair! (ha) With 14 million (I'm going by memory here) people, however, it should have a lot! But London still seems to have much more than its "share." I have not visited London yet, but I can see where I could easily spend weeks just visiting museums to see stuff that I want to see. Maybe one of these days . . . . |

Figure Drawing for All It's Worth, by Andrew Loomis--A FREE Pdf from GoodReads!
Goodreads is primarily a book review and recommendation website. As you may know, I frequently go to them for ratings when I want to supplement ratings found at Amazon and occasionally go to them for reviews by GoodReads members.
But you may not be aware that GoodReads also offers a small selection of books for free download. At least some of them are books that are not in the public domain yet. One of those is Figure Drawing for All It's Worth, by Andrew Loomis. This is an old (those of you born on this year or before, please do not be offended. ha) book, having first been published in 1943 I think. However, it was republished in 1971 and has stellar ratings still today (4.8 at Amazon from 189 reviews, at the present moment). Those are two of the facts that gives me the impression that the book is still being used and appreciated today by students of art. Here's a book description from Amazon: Artist Andrew Loomis writes this book for those who have graduated from the fundamentals of drawing and are ready to embark on their artistic careers. He coordinates all the basic facts gathering the fundamentals, aesthetic as well as practical, of commercial work into one book. He includes chapters on anatomy, planes and lighting, drawing from living models, the figure in action, and costume, among others giving the artist a firm understanding of the science of the trade. He discusses idealization and other tricks of the trade helping the reader to produce work that will find a market. At appropriate stages he inserts typical problems. Explanatory sketches and examples of some of his own best work appear on almost every page. Originally published in 1943 this book continues as a solid reference for artists perfecting figure drawing. The book is 204 pages long and in the pdf format. You do not have to be a GoodReads member in order to download the ebook. Here's the webpage at GoodReads, from which you can download this free ebook. ADDENDUM: The book is not available in digital form at Amazon. However, it is available from them in hardback starting at $27.66. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 12-20-2015 at 11:06 PM. |

A History of Redheaded People--Marked Down 86%; Now Only $2.99.
The 86% is from the digital list (or perhaps the regular digital) price.
EReaderIQ states that "This book is at its lowest price since we started tracking it." Red: A History of the Redhead. By Jacky Colliss Harvey. Rated 4.2 stars, from 46 reviews at the present moment at Amazon. Print list price $28.00; digital list(?) price $21.40; Kindle price now $2.99. Black Dog & Leventhal, publisher. 240 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Red-History-Ja...dp/B00NLR6GW0/. Book Description The brilliantly told, captivating history of red hair throughout the ages and across multiple disciplines, including science, religion, politics, feminism and sexuality, literature, and art The mere mention of red hair calls to mind vivid pictures. Stereotypes of redheaded women range from the funloving scatterbrain, like Lucille Ball, to the fiery-tempered vixen or the penitent prostitute (Mary Magdalene, for example, is almost always depicted as a redhead). Red-haired men are often associated with either the savage barbarian or the redheaded clown. But why is this so? Red: A Natural History of the Redhead is the first book to explore the history of red hair and red-headedness throughout the world. With an obsessive fascination that is as contagious as it is compelling, author Jacky Colliss Harvey begins her quest in prehistory and traces the redhead gene as it made its way out of Africa with the early human diaspora, only to emerge under Northern skies. She goes on to explore red hair in the ancient world (from the Tarim mummies in China to the Islamic kingdom of the Khazars); the prejudice manifested against red hair across medieval Europe; red hair during the Renaissance as both an indicator of Jewishness during the Inquisition and the height of fashion in Protestant England, where it was made famous by the Henry VIII and Elizabeth I; the modern age of art, and literature, and the first positive symbols of red hair in children's characters; modern medicine and science and the genetic and chemical decoding of red hair; and finally, red hair in contemporary culture, from advertising and exploitation to "gingerism" and the new movement against bullying. More than a book for redheads, Red is the exploration of evolution and gene mutation, as well as a compelling social and cultural study of how prejudice and misconceptions of "other" evolve across centuries and continents and are handed down through generations and from one culture to another. |

The terms "University" and "College" -- here in the States -- usually indicate the breadth and depth of programs, especially graduate level. The larger educational program usually means that universities are larger than colleges. And, here in the States, even that may vary.
Here in NJ Montclair State College became Montclair State University after years of steady growth and expansion. As a college, I don't believe they offered any doctoral programs -- as a university, they now offer 7 doctoral programs. I believe that the change had to be approved by the state and regional accreditation agencies. And, just to make it more fun, the adult education school at my old college was known as ... University College. It was eliminated as a separate school several years ago during a reorganization. |

The oddest one I ever saw is Texas Tech on the Midland College campus.
I know they have a medical building there. And for a couple of years there was a business degree program if you already had your associates degree. It was a BS in Business degree. Once a week for 18 months and $18,000. I knew a girl that did that. The course consisted of looking up businesses on the internet and once a week turning in a 7 page paper. I still wonder what actual class the professor needed all those papers for. Now the girl did get three different administrative assistant jobs with that degree. She also got exactly 3 paychecks with said degree. She had no computer skills whatsoever. Oh I was asked by someone if I was going to do the program. I gave her an honest answer. It is a bull excrement degree. Except I used the crude term that starts with s. |

Book on Time Management with Some Fresh (IMHO) Ideas. Marked Down to $2.99.
I passed up this book several times. There are gazillions of books dealing with the same subject as this book does. Sometimes I think that I own half of them.(ha) I thought, "what does this guy (the author)/this book say that hasn't already been said over and over before?" Well, for some reason I looked more carefully at the book and I do believe that the author/book has some fresh things to say! I bought it for myself.

Get FREE Pdf Literature Guides from SparkNotes for Both The Iliad and The Odyssey!
I'm dispensing with the pdf template for this post, in part because I have two items that I want to post together.
A website called sparknotes.com offers free pdf guides to Homer's The Odyssey and The Iliad. To be honest, I don't know very much about the site. I do know that they provide free online guides to various fiction and non-fiction works. Those guides are basically just like CliffsNotes, I think, which most of us are familiar with. I also know that the site is owned by Barnes & Noble. B&N sells these guides. Amazon also has them, in paperback; they are $5.95 each there. The ratings at Amazon and GoodReads for both of the books are great. Each of the books has about 55 pages. Here are the links to the two ebooks: The Iliad. The Odyssey. Merry Christmas to all. I went to the Wikipedia article and read some of it. After reading it, I wondered why I had never heard of them. CliffsNotes I had heard of (since forever); SparkNotes I hadn't heard of. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 12-25-2015 at 07:31 PM. |
