I fainted once, right after giving a pint of blood. I think they took another pint while I was out.

I faint DURING giving blood. Not sure why. They always have to stop and raise me up.
Maybe they have the spigot turned up too high....

I nearly fainted after getting my ears pierced, as a teen. I was walking down the sidewalk when the world started taking on a cracked, glazed appearance. Decided I'd better sit down and put my head on my knees. And a second near-occurrence, on listening to a friend describe his head injuries after a car accident. Yuck....

that happens to me, but i didn't know it had that name. it's usually the prelude to becoming unconscious but sometimes i manage to avoid that bit. it's quite unpleasant.

I've noticed that it is much more common for men to faint during blood donation, and also more common for them to faint just having their blood drawn.

My pet theory is that it is because women are biologically better adapted to decreases in blood pressure (because if you are going to faint every time you have a baby or just have your period, you aren't going to last very long ... you'll end up some saber toothed tiger's lunch), and because women are psychologically more used to seeing their own blood in situations where they know they are not in danger (the old period thing again). Most men, on seeing their own blood, rightly assume that they are wounded or injured.

I used to feel so bad for these big burly guys who would come into LARC to give blood, and were just plain embarrassed when they passed out.

I learned that I did OK if I had a good breakfast a few hours prior to donating blood. Now I have too many meds for them to want it. Funny thing about it. A friend asked how I was just before & I said, "I think I'm going to sit here & faint." And I did.

I donated several times for my own surgeries. Self donation is a great idea. Of course, they throw mine away if I don't use it. And, that's a bit of a waste, but I still think it's a great idea.

Me too, when getting my eyebrow and ear-cartilage pierced. I was fine during, even reassuring the newbie-piercer when he couldn't get the eyebrow one through ("I NEED A TAPER!"). But afterwards I just suddenly needed to lie down on the bed, though I didn't emotionally feel any distress. I wasn't quite as white as the woman getting her googly bits decorated behind the curtain in the bed next door though - she eventually left in quite a state of ghostliness.

I sometimes get a similar feeling during bad migraine - everything can start to fade to grey ("...we fade to grey").

The Red Cross don't want my blood. That whole "male to male sex""in the past 12 months" thing excludes me every time.

Cheers,
Marc

Ah, but you can still do self donation. The Red Cross doesn't want my blood either (that whole taking aspirin to prevent another stroke thing).

And, when I was working at Red Cross (1984-1988), that was my major focus. Taking blood that could not be put into the transfusion rotation (high risk donors) and making compounds out of it that could be used in the lab.

That way, the Red Cross saved tons of money every year, and the high risk donors could still make a substantial contribution.

I grayed out once after taking my cat to the vet -- he had burned his paws. (On the stove, we presume, though we didn't catch him at it.) I thought I was fine, until I stood up at the end of the examination. Then I had to sit down again. I'm still not sure what did it. I'm usually fine about injuries. Maybe I hadn't had enough to eat or enough water that day. Or, I do have low blood pressure, so that might have contributed.

I had forgotten, I did faint once as a teen. I'd been out sick for several days, but was trying to get ready to go to school. I went to tell my father I didn't feel so well, and then just sort of crumpled against the door frame. (He was very fast. He'd been lying in bed and still managed to catch me before I hit the floor.)

I didn't go to school that day....
