I've noticed Kobo's prices are quite high compared to other retailers. Higher than usual. Is it possible they raised prices while the contest is running? Reduced or eliminated discounting?
An example from Kobo's front page: http://store.kobobooks.com/en-US/ebo...lasting-lane-1 http://smile.amazon.com/Everlasting-...sin=B00LYXDZUO |

As yet, I've got no higher than a 35% code, so that's the end of that. I have two thoughts; that Kobo isn't willing to lose money on coupon sales any more and that they assume (I think justifiably) that people buy either epubs or Kindle format and that they're not interchangeable. |

Many indie/self-published writers are also raising their prices to account for deciding to give away the first book in a series for free. There's a large number of them who feel they MUST offer the first book free. That means the second and up are averaging more than the 2.99 price you used to see. I have seen a few cases where indies charge more on Kobo than Amazon and that isn't likely to help them with sales... |

Looking at Kobo's bestsellers (Today's Top 50) only 14 titles are priced above $1.99.
Amazon's Top 50 (Paid) shows 32 titles above $1.99. It seems people go to Kobo for the inexpensive and possibly discountable books and avoid the full priced ones. |

Well, I go to either--whichever has the discount! I haven't bought a full priced book in months. I'd have to check to be certain, but I'd guess it's been well over a year since I paid full price for a book.

I go to Kobo if it's cheap enough to make the potential hassle worthwhile.
If it's the same price at Amazon or less, I go to Amazon. If it's a little cheaper at Kobo and shows as a DRM-free EPUB, I go to Kobo -- if it doesn't show as a DRM-free EPUB, I go to Amazon. If it's a lot cheaper at Kobo, then I hold my breath, cross my fingers and buy it at Kobo. Last edited by cromag; 01-24-2015 at 07:33 PM. Reason: Clarification |

Be careful at Kobo. If they are still doing the ePub3 > kepub conversions, you'll find more then just new Tor eBooks being converted to kepub. I've been noticing more epUb eBooks are coming out as ePub 3 (when there is no frigging reason not to be ePub 2). So if Kobo is still converting, it means more and more new eBook are not going to be available as ePub 2 and thus, you would need Kobo Desktop and Obok along with Calibre to remove the DRM if the eBook has DRM and if you want to then convert to ePub, you would need the current Modify ePub plugin.

I don't follow ebook goings-on much, but just the other day I read about Sony shutting down its ebook store, and it makes me nervous considering that I have 600+ books with Kobo. Most of them are stored in the Kobo 'cloud', of course. Can someone point me to a site that explains how to download and backup my titles in the event that Kobo goes the Sony route some time in the future? Or am I being paranoid? Apologies for my ignorance on these things.

Jswolf (or some else?) as I"m not on my PC at the moment I can't paste the Digital Reader article link discussing obok - could you paste it please. It is within MR"s rules to paste that link here. Thanks.
Docno, Nate's Article will help you and provide the obok code you need for handling kepubs. Last edited by Lynx-lynx; 01-24-2015 at 11:13 PM. |
