It's always a good idea to check on prices at other sites.

Long gone are the days of 75% codes which work on all books.
Let us have a moment of silence.

Personally even if Google were cheapest by a mile I wouldn't buy there. They do weird stuff with books. Someone was telling me once about how they put them through their own separate processing or something, which I now don't remember specifics of at all, but I can say from experience that a couple books I got there were not the same as what was available elsewhere--ie, they were distinctly worse, such as including scanned material (in the epub) instead of all reflowable text.

Those were academic type publishers and may not (probably doesn't) apply to your average NYT bestseller, but it's put me off risking Google's store.

You should get a warning if it's not a reflowable epub. Like "zooming will be required to read on smaller screens". You can also get a sample first on an android device and if it's not a normal epub, the font and sizing options will not be there. I think this used to be a problem years ago.

It is a reflowable epub, for 99% of it. It's just certain parts, that aren't like that on the copy available everywhere else. Mostly (but not exclusively) it's stuff like captions on images that I can't read because they're scanned--but only on Google's copy. You wouldn't necessarily see it in a sample, and when it's missing some features you wouldn't know at all unless you had the copy sold somewhere else to compare it to (like a very frustrating time I spent cursing why the footnotes weren't clickable, until I discovered they WERE--in everyone else's copy).

Just an FYI - I've noticed lately (last couple of weeks?) that all books I've looked at now show the EXACT format you'll get upon purchase. EPUB, DRM or not, etc.

Of course, sometimes there isn't anything there at all to download or read, but that's another issue with Kobo.

If no format is listed, then it's a kepub. Those aren't downloadable.

True. The one I've having an issue with right now says DRM-Free EPUB. Nothing there, though, to download.

I'm assured I'll get an answer to my inquiry in a week or so, though...

And that's been getting better lately. Several books that hadn't been downloadable now are.

My major beef now is the way the books from my Sony library are handled. As long as they're on my bookmarked/reading list, there's no problem... but they don't show up on the purchased list or in my purchase history. Thus, as best I can tell, if I ever remove one of those books from the b/r list, there's no way to get it back. I wouldn't be able to go to the purchased list and put it back there, but browsing to the product page shows that I own it, so I couldn't even repurchase it. This displeases me.

Did you purchase the book or add a preview to your library? If the latter, that behavior's completely normal.

Purchase. It happens now and then at Kobo - there is no book behind the listing to be downloaded. I'll give them a bit to decide if it should be and fix it or do a return. Ridiculous that it happens (other than their weird listings that allow the file to be served by other sites, mostly for self-pubs and what ends up being pirated entries - happens at B&N too, so not unique to them; at least Amazon forces all downloads into their system, so if you do buy a pirated book, you now get to keep it ... or return at your own discretion, rather than have a broken entry in your library with no clue why).

This is a new book, the listing info all looks ok, so should not be a pirating issue (nothing shows it as downloading from offsite, etc). There just isn't a book file there.

I never use their ridiculous system for previews (just use Amazon, it works). My biggest issue with Kobo is their insistence on permanently removing books from your shelf if you added them to your library when free - their support people say "well, you can buy it again" if you complain. It's why I refuse to use any of their apps on any device. Too much trouble to have to remove the entire thing each time, in order to remove books you've read, since deleting isn't an option (doing so in the app perm deletes it from your library ... happened to me more than once, before I caught on to their problem).

Your contract was not with Kobo for these books, so I wouldn't expect them to show up on the purchase history as you didn't purchase them from Kobo. When Sony and WH Smith sold/transferred their business to Kobo they just transferred the books you bought not the orders relating to them. Make sure you keep the confirmation emails from Sony so that you can prove where you bought the book in case of any problems.

My reading list has more than twice the number of books as that in my purchase history because I've had books transferred from WH Smith & Sony.

Speaking of the Sony transfer... I bought the complete Harry Potter set from Pottermore.com and linked Sony, B&N, and Amazon to get the books into my accounts. Kobo showed as one of the vendors, but the button to link it was grayed out. I opened a case with Pottermore and they never quite understood what I was trying to say, so I never got my Pottermore account linked to my Kobo account. When I transferred my books from Sony to Kobo, those transferred, but have no download links on the website (which I'm assuming means kepub). I downloaded the epubs and freed them from DRM from my Sony library, so it's not a huge deal, but annoying, nonetheless.

I had a few undownloadable books. Kobo refunded the cost, but never removed them from my library. Two months later I clicked the link for the fun of it and was able to download all three of them.

I find a different problem with Kobo now, tho. I have 2 books that I did not download at the time of purchase. I don't know what happened - links shifted? - but now I can't download them Sent a couple of e-mails to CS in October and November and to this date received no response.
