Comments: Book Description (Amazon): In what is widely considered to be the first Gothic novel, a monk must resist a temptation that could consume his soul Ambrosio has developed a reputation across Madrid for his piety and selflessness in his role as a monk. Despite his virtue, his status as the abbey’s favorite son is put in jeopardy with the arrival of Matilda, a woman with a terrible secret who disguises herself as a monk to be closer to Ambrosio. Story of the Transit thru the Northwest Passage by Modern-Day Family--$2.98 WS Deal!
Title: The Other Side of the Ice: One Family's Treacherous Journey Negotiating the Northwest Passage.
Genre: Non-Fiction (Adventurers & Explorers/Travel). Author(s): Sprague Theobald; Allan Kreda. Price: $2.98 ($0.99 ebook (marked down) + $1.99 Whispersync audio). Regular Price of Audio, by Itself, at Audible: $11.95. Ebook Rating/Number of Reviews: 4.1 stars/215 reviews (Amazon). Audio Rating/Number of Ratings: 4.0/12 ratings. Pages/Audio Length: 225/7 hours and 59 minutes. Narrator(s): Sprague Theobald. Audible URL: http://www.audible.com/pd/Bios-Memoi...3248390&sr=1-1. Amazon URL (can get the whole Whispersync deal here): http://www.amazon.com/Other-Side-Ice...thwest+Passage. Comments: Book Description (Amazon): A sailor and his family's harrowing and inspiring story of their attempt to sail the treacherous Northwest Passage. Sprague Theobald, an award-winning documentary filmmaker and expert sailor with over 40,000 offshore miles under his belt, always considered the Northwest Passage--the sea route connecting the Atlantic to the Pacific--the ultimate uncharted territory. Since Roald Amundsen completed the first successful crossing of the fabled Northwest Passage in 1906, only twenty-four pleasure craft have followed in his wake. Many more people have gone into space than have traversed the Passage, and a staggering number have died trying. From his home port of Newport, Rhode Island, through the Passage and around Alaska to Seattle, it would be an 8,500-mile trek filled with constant danger from ice, polar bears, and severe weather. What Theobald couldn't have known was just how life-changing his journey through the Passage would be. Reuniting his children and stepchildren after a bad divorce more than fifteen years earlier, the family embarks with unanswered questions, untold hurts, and unspoken mistrusts hanging over their heads. Unrelenting cold, hungry polar bears, and a haunting landscape littered with sobering artifacts from the tragic Franklin Expedition of 1845, as well as personality clashes that threaten to tear the crew apart, make The Other Side of the Ice a harrowing story of survival, adventure, and, ultimately, redemption. Hi. Mr. Whispersync (ha) here.
Next week (if it is being held in other countries, it may have already started) is "Banned Books Week" at Amazon. They are promoting, including with reduced prices, 25+ "banned and challenged" books. On another thread, Svenlind posted a link to all of the ebooks. Some of you may prefer to listen to some of the books, rather than read the ebooks. However, since you are following this thread, that probably means that you don't want to pay much to do it! As a public service (or public disservice, depending upon your perspective), I am posting the Banned Books Week ebooks that have good Whispersync deals (I define that to mean, among other things, that the Whispersync deals generally will be less than $6.00). Here they are: The Handmaid's Tale, by Margaret Atwood--$4.98. Flowers for Algernon, by Daniel Keyes--$5.48. Anastasia Krupnik, by Lois Lowry--$4.98. The WS Deal is Popular and Has Stellar Ratings. The Story in It Will Warm Your Heart.
Title: Wish You Happy Forever: What China's Orphans Taught Me About Moving Mountains.
Genre: Non-Fiction (Children's Studies/Adoption/Memoirs/China). Author(s): Jenny Bowen. Price: $5.98 ($1.99 ebook (marked down) + $3.99 Whispersync audio). Regular Price of Audio, by Itself, at Audible: $23.95. Ebook Rating/Number of Reviews: 4.8 stars/101 reviews (Amazon). Audio Rating/Number of Ratings: 4.5/12 ratings. Pages/Audio Length: 341/8 hours and 24 minutes. Narrator(s): Jenny Bowen. Audible URL: http://www.audible.com/pd/Bios-Memoi...3313072&sr=1-1. Amazon URL (can get the whole Whispersync deal here): http://www.amazon.com/Wish-You-Happy...ving+Mountains. Comments: The ebook is the #1 Kindle seller in the "Children's Studies" subgenre and the #2 seller in the Kindle "Adoption" subgenre. Book Description (Amazon): Wish You Happy Forever chronicles Half the Sky founder Jenny Bowen's personal and professional journey to transform Chinese orphanages—and the lives of the neglected girls who live in them—from a state of quiet despair to one of vibrant promise. After reading an article about the thousands of baby girls languishing in Chinese orphanages, Bowen and her husband adopted a little girl from China and brought her home to Los Angeles, not out of a need to build a family but rather a commitment to save one child. A year later, as she watched her new daughter play in the grass with her friends, thriving in an environment where she knew she was loved, Bowen was overcome with a desire to help the children that she could not bring home. That very day she created Half the Sky Foundation, an organization conceived to bring love into the life of every orphan in China and one that has actually managed to fulfill its promise. In Wish You Happy Forever, a fish out of water tale like no other, Bowen relates her struggle to bring the concept of "child nurture and responsive care" to bemused Chinese bureaucrats and how she's actually succeeding. Five years after Half the Sky's first orphanage program opened, government officials began to mention child welfare and nurturing care in public speeches. And, in 2011, at China's Great Hall of the People, Half the Sky and its government partners celebrated the launch of The Rainbow Program, a groundbreaking initiative to change the face of orphan care by training every child welfare worker in the country. Thanks to Bowen's relentless perseverance through heartbreak and a dose of humor, Half the Sky's goal to bring love the lives of forgotten children comes ever closer. Last day for these free monthly offers:
ps: no idea when Treasure Island will actually disappear. Amazon's not consistent with this offer. ChristianAudio (AHA) definitely expires their free monthly offers on the last day of the month and LearnOutLoud (Great Biographies) usually expires their free monthly offers several days into the following month. . No idea. Someone at Goodreads said that they received an email about this offer so Ford may have said in it. I never received the email so I have no idea what was in it.
If it wasn't for skinmaan, I would've missed this offer. |

Now my issue is that Audible still won't accept the promo code on my account. They told me last time that it had to do with how my old-style account was merged with my Amazon account, but they also told me they fixed it, so I don't know what to believe. EDIT: I got the promo code to work. I had to copy it from the url on the page the email link ends up on and paste it manually at checkout. Whatever..... Last edited by ApK; 09-30-2015 at 01:42 PM. |

Well, I got the email after all. It was inside my Goodreads account. I never look there. I was expecting it to go to my regular email account, like the other Ford emails did.
