A bit more of the initially mentioned sub-plot:

Since that [previously described] frustrating transubstantiation the devil has never come near to dominion over a mortal woman. His incubi and succubi which tempt and torment the piety of anchorites, are phantasms, evoked from and clouded and thickened with the dust of the earth or the sweat of the body or the shed seed of man or the water of ocean, so as to bewilder and deceive longing eyes and eager hands. The shape of Lawrence Wentworth's desire had emerged from the power of his body. He had assented to that making, and again, outside the garden of satisfied dreams, he had assented to the company of the shape which could not be except by his will and was imperceptibly to possess his will. Image without incarnation, it was the delight of his incarnation for it was without any of the things that troubled him in the incarnation of the beloved. He could exercise upon it all arts but one; he could not ever discover by it or practise towards it the freedom of love. A man cannot love himself, he can only idolize it, and over the idol delightfully tyrannize without purpose.

<later>

As he moved, his mind spoke, or more than his mind. The whole air of the Hill said in his ear, with a crisp intelligence: "You fool, that's not Adela; you couldn't carry Adela. What do you think you'll get out of anything that isn't Adela?" He recognized well enough that the real Adela might have given him considerable trouble to lift, but his whole damnation was that he would not choose the trouble to lift the real Adela. This thing was light in his arms, though solid to his heart, and his brain was dazed by its whispers.

Nope! I should read through past entries in this thread, to see who the major guessers are. Here's another quote, from the 2nd thread as mentioned above, then I'll try to wait till everybody has had a chance to guess.

"Give me your hand," the other said, "then come and dream, till you discover, so soon, the ripeness of your dream." She paused, and added, "You'll never have to do anything for others any more."

It was the last touch, and false, false because of the habit of her past and because of Stanhope's promise. The fountain of beauty had sprung upward in a last thrust; it broke against the arched roof of his world, and the shock stung her into coldness. Never have to do anything--and she had been promising herself that she would carry someone's parcel as hers had been carried, that she would be what he said she could. Like it or not, it had been an oath; rash or wise it stood. "An oath, an oath, I have an oath in heaven."

I've decided that this book is so mysticly difficult to grasp (as a reader) that I'd better read it again, immediately after finishing it. So now, I find I must share this quote too:

"Nature's so terribly good. Don't you think so, Mr. Stanhope?" ….

He turned his head and answered, "That Nature is terribly good? Yes, Miss Fox. You do mean 'terribly'?"

"Why, certainly," Miss Fox said. "Terribly--dreadfully--very."

"Yes," Stanhope said again. "Very. Only--you must forgive me; it comes from doing so much writing, but when I say 'terribly' I think I mean 'full of terror'. A dreadful goodness."

I really have no idea either. Certainly not something I've read. Is it something by Algernon Blackwood?

There were clues in the "name that book" thread -- because I'd been asking about this book there. Here's a quote about it:
Quote:
Charles Williams’s best novel is entitled Descent into Hell. Here we watch a perfectly unnoticeable and respectable historian damn himself to Hell by an unremitting sequence of very small petulant choices. Nothing big. But again and again and again he will not have the Way of Exchange — My Life for Yours. At one point, it comes down to his merely having to say yes or no to some folks who are putting on a play, and who need his historical acumen to tell them whether they’ve got the costumes right. But he refuses out of sheer testiness. [He's the guy in love with a creature of his own imagination. - deb]

Well, says Williams, if I will have it that way, then I will have it that way — forever. Naturally we all say in chorus, “George Macdonald! The Great Divorce [C.S.Lewis] !” And we are right, of course: “There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, ‘Thy will be done,’ and those to whom God says, in the end, ‘Thy will be done.’” Williams likes to call Hell Gomorrah: the place beyond the city where I seek the mirror image of myself (Sodom), where I may be altogether alone with no one to get in my hair [Gomorrah - deb].

P.S. No where is God mentioned in the book - only "The Omniscience". And I don't think Hell is call by that name, either. So it isn't a Christian book, so much as a mystic book.

P.S. Look up "doppelganger" in Wikipedia. I just yesterday added a small paragraph about Charles Williams' use of one, in this book.

Quote:
Charles Williams included the above quote from Prometheus Unbound (1820) in his book Descent Into Hell (1939). The lead character Pauline Anstruther has seen her own doppelganger all through her life, and spends her time terrified of any next meeting. In the end, this doppelganger turns out to be a positive force, bearing hope to a martyred ancestor of Pauline's. The terror Pauline had during her life is, in effect, the spread out terror of the burning martyr, allowing the martyr to do without terror and have only joy during his death at the stake.

OK - let's jump start this thread again!

“The supposed great misery of our century is the lack of time; our sense of that, not a disinterested love of science, and certainly not wisdom, is why we devote such a huge proportion of the ingenuity and income of our societies to finding faster ways of doing things - as if the final aim of mankind was to grow closer not to a perfect humanity, but to a perfect lightning-flash.”

Dan Falk wrote a book, In Search of Time, but I don't recall that particular quote being in there.

No & No .... Not even close ...

“There are some men who are consoled by the idea that there are women less attractive than their wives; and others who are haunted by the knowledge that there are more attractive.”

“We are all in flight from the real reality. That is the basic definition of Homo Sapiens.”
