Thumbs up Now reading....

Just finished 3 books by Sarah Hoyt.

Crawling between Heaven and Earth (compilation)
Draw one in the Dark
Gentleman Takes a Chance (2 x shapeshifter books).

They are good yarns.

Before that I did a week or 2 reading Pournelle - the Prince was the largest book.

I decided to have a Sci-fi classic weekend so I have finished Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham(1951) which was surprisingly good.
I'm half way through Armageddon 2419 AD by Phillip Francis Nowlan(1928) which is not so bad so far.
Next I'll return to my usual Thriller/Adventure theme with Aftershock by Stephen Kyle.

Where did you buy them from? I can't find them as eBooks in any of the usual stores.

After many digressions and interruptions (and quite a few eBooks!) I recently finished the biography of Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford that I wrote about in this earlier post. It's dead-tree format, not an eBook. You'll probably have to get it via inter-library-loan.

I can't recommend it highly enough! If you have the slightest interest in history, history of science, international skullduggery , general roguery , or late 18th and early 19th-century political-science, you should make certain to READ THIS BOOK!!

Just finishing up Trevanian's novel Shibumi. It's kind of a masterpiece, written back in the 70's and it doesn't suffer with age the way many old spy type thrillers do, like Ian Fleming's. He's the guy that wrote The Eiger Sanction from which they made that Clint Eastwood movie (book far better than movie fyi). I read both of those books a long time ago and I noticed the other day they were available so I snagged them.

Haven't popped in here for awhile so.. before that I read Rafael Sabatini's Scaramouche and Vernor Vinge's Fire Upon The Deep. Both great.

I've just started on the trilogy... I am fairly pleased so far.

After that it's The Idiot by Dostoevsky. One of my buddies claim that it's his best work, and I've yet to read it.

How are you enjoying the evolution in his writing style?

I've noticed that his signature style really started to emerge around this time, and while it gets even better later on, you can now really see the world nearly fully realised.

Wow, I forgot about Trevanian a long time ago.. I really liked "The Summer of Katya". Completely different from his 'sanction'-books, but most enjoyable

I'm in the middle of a massive historical romance kick (ahh I love my "smut" novels as my friends call them. Sony sold me on the Reader when I saw an ad that said "Read hundreds of Romance Novels...and no one will see the cover")

Just wrapped up Dracula, now I am on "Secrets of a Wedding Night" by Sophie Jordan. Then tackling "Prague," which was an ebookstore freebie.

Review of "Fatal Encryption"

Hope everyone is having a good holiday season! I finished reading "Fatal Encryption" from Debra Purdy Kong. Pretty good murder mystery from a little known Canadian author. Kept me guessing until the end.

Full review below:
***************************
Fatal Encryption – An Alex Bellamy Murder Mystery

Rating: 3.5 of 5
Author: Debra Purdy Kong
Available: Paperback, Kindle

Halloween—Port Moody, British Columbia: Unable to join the trick-or-treating fun due to the chicken pox, one young suburban girl is the sole witness to a costumed reveler responsible for brutal premeditated murder. Nearby, the wife of the victim’s brother storms home from a party and finds the body. But why was he killed? What did he know?

Alex Bellamy a young computer geek in need of work takes a contract job to solve recent network and computer glitches at his girlfriend’s company. He soon learns that the glitches are more than just pranks. In fact, all of the computers vital records are encrypted by an extortionist threatening to destroy all of the records or pay ten million dollars to save the company. Soon Bellamy is engulfed in a whirlwind of corporate greed and believes that not only is the company at risk but lives as well; the suburban murder and the young girls knowledge is the key to unlocking the conspirators’ identity. In his zeal to debug the company’s computer system and solve the murder, Bellamy finds his as well as his friends and families lives are in danger.

Debra Purdy Kong’s book “Fatal Encryption” is an entertaining mystery full of back room corporate deals, family squabbles and power plays, secret affairs, and murder. I enjoyed this novel. Kong creates multiple plausible suspects throughout the story leaving the reader guessing all the way until the end. I was also surprised by how bold and brave Alex Bellamy was throughout the book. He frequently questioned potential suspects telling them how he believed they committed various crimes which if true would have put him in grave danger as in most situations he was alone with these potential killers.

Reminiscent of “Murder She Wrote”, “Fatal Encryption” features an everyday guy with good observational and deductive skills who solves a crime. Kong has created an interested character and I look forward to the next Alex Bellamy mystery.

Is she any good? I've not read any of hers.

Currently I am half way through The Count of Monte Cristo. I have finished The Hound and Twilight (a re-read)and planning on the Sherlock Holmes Series and rereading Atlas Shrugged as well as the Jan. choice.
