Yes, Amazon has introduced new DRM in recent firmware releases, version 5.18.6 for Scribes and version 5.18.5 for other newer Kindle models.

No, the DeDRM plugin handles DRM removal, not KFX Input.

The new DRM makes use of a secret stored in a location that is inaccessible unless your Kindle is jailbroken. And even with a jailbroken device there is currently no method available to remove this new DRM.

See the Dealing with Kindle ebooks in calibre thread for information about the few remaining workable methods of handling Kindle books.

Yes there is. You need to get a Kindle that has no more new firmware updates. So get a Kindle in the range of a Kindle 3/Kindle Keyboard up to a Paperwhite 1. Do not get a newer Kindle that can install the latest firmware. Then you can use that Kindle to remove the DRM and transfer to your Scribe.

As far as I know nothing has changed regarding DRM for older Kindle models such as that one. Make sure that you have correctly entered the serial number of the Kindle into the DRM removal plugin. Other than that ask for help at the site hosting that plugin.

Books in KFX format are composed of multiple files. If some of them failed to download before you imported the book into calibre that could lead to the errors you are seeing. I recommend removing the book from your device and downloading it again, waiting a while for it to download completely before importing.

If that does not work I will need more information in order to assist further, such as the complete logs produced when the book was imported and when it was converted.

(from my Scribe Colorsoft)

Attached are two notebooks (in archive.zip):

First is a notebook (imported to KFX) with one page for each of the templates (30 total) and template name written on corresponding page.

Second is shader tool samples, using each of the 9 colors and a gradient built up of successive strokes (went to 12).

The ePub conversions didn't show any color in the shader tool notebook other than Black, but the template examples do show template colors, except for Legal pad, which doesn't show the yellow background.

Let me know if you need the nbk files instead, or other samples that would help out.

Yes, please on the nbk files. It's hard to tell what information may have been lost in the conversion process.

Actually those do look like nbk files.

I screwed up on the templates notebook: first few pages had wrong template assigned (including Legal pad). This one is fixed and expected colors appear in the ePub generated from it (the labels all use Black).

Here's the fixed one:

Thanks. I am still looking over the notebooks you provided and updating the plugin to handle the new notebook format.

I have been able to extract the stroke colors. Oddly the colors you used are numbered internally 0-5 and 7-10, skipping color number 6.

The notebook with the colored strokes uses a new brush type, #9. Did you select it purposely and do you know its name?

The notebook with the different templates has some of the handwriting converted to text annotations along with alternate transcriptions. For example the string "Wide ruled" is present along with alternatives ["wide", "Wid", "Nide", "Vide"] and ["ruted", "rruled", "rruted", "rulad"].

I assume brush type 9 is the new Shader tool. It's new with 5.19.1 (I think for all the new Scribes). That's why I did the notebook for you to look at.

Notebooks are now searchable as well, so it does some handwriting recognition somewhere (you can enter text notes with handwriting, no internet access needed). So either the strings are added by the same on device module, or it happens when you sync to cloud; I would have to run an experiment.

I assume notebooks are traversed by indexer service now. Alternate spellings would make search more likely to find (inaccurately transcribed) handwriting.

It would also be cool if handwriting were searchable in book and document annotations as well, I will check that when I get a chance.

In the notebook with the new shader you have for each color a short line along with a longer line labeled "1" and "12". What do these represent?

Can you share what these notebook pages actually look like on your device or when exported?
