Yes there is. You need to get a Kindle that has no more new firmware updates. So get a Kindle in the range of a Kindle 3/Kindle Keyboard up to a Paperwhite 1. Do not get a newer Kindle that can install the latest firmware. Then you can use that Kindle to remove the DRM and transfer to your Scribe.

I have an old Kindle paparwhite 5th Gen EY21 that download AZW and AZW3 and not the new KFX. But with Calibre I can't deDRM anyway. Do you know if there is a new plugin or another trick. Thanks

As far as I know nothing has changed regarding DRM for older Kindle models such as that one. Make sure that you have correctly entered the serial number of the Kindle into the DRM removal plugin. Other than that ask for help at the site hosting that plugin.

If that does not work I will need more information in order to assist further, such as the complete logs produced when the book was imported and when it was converted. |

(from my Scribe Colorsoft)
Attached are two notebooks (in archive.zip): First is a notebook (imported to KFX) with one page for each of the templates (30 total) and template name written on corresponding page. Second is shader tool samples, using each of the 9 colors and a gradient built up of successive strokes (went to 12). The ePub conversions didn't show any color in the shader tool notebook other than Black, but the template examples do show template colors, except for Legal pad, which doesn't show the yellow background. Let me know if you need the nbk files instead, or other samples that would help out. Last edited by tomsem; 01-03-2026 at 09:55 PM. |

I screwed up on the templates notebook: first few pages had wrong template assigned (including Legal pad). This one is fixed and expected colors appear in the ePub generated from it (the labels all use Black).
Here's the fixed one: |

I have been able to extract the stroke colors. Oddly the colors you used are numbered internally 0-5 and 7-10, skipping color number 6. The notebook with the colored strokes uses a new brush type, #9. Did you select it purposely and do you know its name? The notebook with the different templates has some of the handwriting converted to text annotations along with alternate transcriptions. For example the string "Wide ruled" is present along with alternatives ["wide", "Wid", "Nide", "Vide"] and ["ruted", "rruled", "rruted", "rulad"]. |

Notebooks are now searchable as well, so it does some handwriting recognition somewhere (you can enter text notes with handwriting, no internet access needed). So either the strings are added by the same on device module, or it happens when you sync to cloud; I would have to run an experiment. I assume notebooks are traversed by indexer service now. Alternate spellings would make search more likely to find (inaccurately transcribed) handwriting. It would also be cool if handwriting were searchable in book and document annotations as well, I will check that when I get a chance. |

Can you share what these notebook pages actually look like on your device or when exported? |
