Wicked dulcimer playing. Brian Jones really made this album special.

Brian put on a dulcimer clinic

Got here after watching Conan interview with Mick Jagger (July 2026). Mick said he learned how to sing falsetto after hearing this song. Awesome track!

AI: "Your ears are not deceiving you—Don Covay’s main, front-and-center lead vocal on "Mercy, Mercy" is sung in a gritty, earthy full baritone. [1, 2, 3]

When Mick Jagger mentioned learning the trick from that record, he was specifically talking about mimicking the high falsetto background harmonies embedded in the track. [1, 2]

The Specific Dynamic Jagger Was Coping

The "Harmony" Trick: Jagger explicitly cleared this up in a 1995 interview with Rolling Stone, stating: "I learned the trick from Don Covay. I got it from the record 'Mercy, Mercy' where he sings falsetto as a harmony." 1, 2"

Didn't knew of this version:

At age 81, the first 2 minutes still gets me kicking

At age 30, it's the last 2 minutes for me

At 70 it's definitely the last half for me. It's not even close. Although I do enjoy the initial riff.

At 48 . i'm in laverage

One of the bands that, IMHO, were precursors to the heavy metal genre. Though that might just be 'heavy metal thunder' in the lyrics...

I'd tried to find the link of an early heavy metal band I heard, but can't at the moment, btw lol https://www.degeneratestate.org/post...essing-part-1/

Thank you for keeping the music alive! It has been over 40 years since we recorded this album. I'm getting old!

Edit: 11/17/25
The band recorded two albums. They were "Living Ain't Easy" and "Blackbird" while we were still actively playing. A third was recorded by us under the ZAHARAS name. That one is called "Shades of Darkness" and is only in CD format. A fourth CD was recorded by me with help from Gary Freeman playing drums on some of the songs. The fourth venture was a country cd of songs I had been putting together for years. It is called "Crazy Over You. It has a few nice songs on it. The third and fourth albums has some songs with rudimentary drum machine tracks.

Then just for the hell of it, I used karaoke music and recorded a Christmas CD. It is not that good but I love it. I am usually screaming out the vocals so singing Christmas songs was pretty hard.

A good many of our songs can be found on my YouTube page.

ZAHARAS was a southern rock band that originated in Hickory, North Carolina in 1977.

"Lillie" is one of the songs that will be on my new CD (if I ever get it finished)..

Great, great band:
