I did this, but the first time it didn't work. The second time through I also made a new account and then selected "finish later". At first I thought that it worked, but it's now just an unregistered 5.8.2.1

The first day after 5.8.2.1 hit when trying to redo the factory downgrade and jailbreak I got the "unrecognized file, contact amazon." message, but after un-registering and putting on airplane mode I was able to do the factory downgrade and redo my jailbreak using the regular method in the first post while on FW 5.8.2.1

Not sure which thing I did made the device accept the update, but it worked.

No.
The only reports are on old PW-2 and PW-3 models with an incomplete jailbreak.

Follow the directions in the first post exactly and completely, it will work without any problems.

5.8.2.1 has cloud collections that may/or may not be supported.
If not supported by our add-ins, someone will have to update them, someone other than myself.
On-device collections support should still work.

You MUST follow the directions fully and completely regardless of current firmware version!

Removed big, red, warning (no failures of this JB procedure confirmed that might not have been user caused).

Confirmation data point, FWIW: Starting with a brand-new Kindle Voyage on 5.8.2.1, I followed the instructions in the initial post, successfully jailbreaked (jailbroke?), reinstalled 5.8.2.1, and then installed KUAL and the screensaver hack. All is working as expected, that is, there does not seem to be any jailbreak-disrupting quality to 5.8.2.1.

It has been only reported on devices old enough to have been previously jail broken with the 5.6.5-only jail break.

That is:
1) Long enough that usage history of the device is not available.
(History of using 'reset' rather than 'restart' not available.)

2) The 5.6.5-only jail break is a two part installation.
That tread shows that a major problem at that time was people failing to install the second part.
(Which is one of the failings I tried to avoid with this three part installation.)

3) Internal details of the "Jail Break Survival Code" (a.k.a: "Hotfix") have changed over time.
For instance, previously there wasn't a search bar command that had to be bridged across the update installation.

4) Logic.
a) Failures can have multiple causes, most unknown or unknowable remotely.
b) Successes only require following all of the directions fully and correctly (also a challenge for a very few number of people).
c) People report failures, but only very rarely join the site to report successes.

At this point in time, I will stick with my:
"Unable to confirm failures that might have been user induced."
