Blanche Among the Talented Tenth is the second in the Blanche White series by Barbara Neely. It has dropped to $0.99 at Kindle US, no idea why or for how long. The first in this series was free earlier this year, and I've been meaning to read it because it looks good, but haven't gotten to it...sigh! Anyway, here's the info for the second...

link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00P6NDETK

Spoiler:
Quote:
“Endlessly Entertaining!” Publishers Weekly

BLANCHE AND THE TALENTED TENTH

The second, ground-breaking mystery featuring African-American maid and amateur sleuth Blanche White by Agatha, Anthony, and Macavity Award winning Author Barbara Neely

When Blanche White moved north to Boston, she believed it would be a better place to raise her kids, especially after she got them into an elite private school. But now her children are becoming elitist and judgmental, acquiring more attitude than education. So when she and her kids are invited to Amber Cove, an exclusive resort in Maine for wealthy blacks, Blanche jumps at the chance to see how the other half lives and maybe stop her kids turning into people she doesn’t want to know. When one of the guests kills himself, and another is electrocuted in her bathtub, Blanche becomes an accidental detective once again, using her sharp wit and keen social insight to peel back some disturbing color and class distinctions within the black community that may have driven someone to murder.

“One of the best fictional detectives conjured up in years,” Library Journal

“An acerbic portrait of class infighting at its most corrosive,” Kirkus Reviews

“The uproarious Blanche White, the southern housekeeper who knows her own mind, opened doors to the nuances of black life for readers and writers alike. Barbara Neely is a trailblazer,” Naomi Hirahara, Edgar Award-winning author.

I got another late afternoon email from the (not very early) Early Bird Books/Open Road folks, announcing a sale on six Joan Hess books: 3 Maggody titles, one collection of short stories written as Joan Hess, one Joan Hadley (pen name) title, and one collection of Joan Hadley short stories. All have dropped to $1.99 at a number of retailers.

Not sure how long this sale will last - IMS, last time it was only for the rest of the day, so you might want to move fast if you want any of these. The titles are:
  • Mortal Remains in Maggody
  • Martians in Maggody
  • Maggody and the Moonbeams
  • Caveat Emptor and Other Stories (written as Hess)
  • The Deadly Ackee (Hadley)
  • Big Foot Stole My Wife and Other Stories (written as Hadley)
Here are Kindle US and Kobo US links for all the titles. I don't have time to do all of the retailers, but the email also indicates the sale is good at BN, Google and iTunes as well. Open Road is couponable/VIP-able at Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/gp/search/?se...ss&price=0-200
Kobo US: https://store.kobobooks.com/search?Q...&sort=PriceAsc

Nestled along the Adriatic coastline, the kingdom of Averna has suddenly - and suspiciously - become the hottest property in Europe, and Albert Campion is given the task of recovering the long-missing proofs of ownership.

His mission takes him from the French Riviera to the sleepy village of Pontisbright, where he meets the flame-haired Amanda Fitton. Her family claim to be the rightful heirs to the principality, and insist on joining Campion's quest. Unfortunately for them, a criminal financier and his heavies are also on the trail - the clock is ticking for Campion and his cohorts to outwit the thugs and solve the mystery of Averna.

This is a stand-alone title within Margery Allingham’s Albert Campion series. However, if you wish to read the books in the order that they were written please follow the link below to have a look at the order of publication:

Servant of the Crown is a 3 book box set of the (you guessed it) Servant of the Crown mysteries by Denise Domning. It is free right now at Kindle US, no idea why or for how long. This series appears to be self-pub, but I've read the first (it was free by itself a while back) and enjoyed it, and am happy to get the next two for free. The author also writes romances, and has at least one conventionally published romance series from some years back.

Titles in the box set include:
  • Season of the Raven
  • Season of the Fox
  • The Lost Innocents

A 3-book box set containing Season of the Raven, Season of the Fox, and Lost Innocents.

Book I, SEASON OF THE RAVEN
4.3 stars
A Miller Found Under His Wheel

It's 1194 and Sir Faucon de Ramis, the shire's newly appointed Keeper of the Pleas, must do his duty and make an official declaration of the cause of a miller's death. Saddled with a clerk who names Faucon his 'penance', the shire's first Crowner must thread the tangled relationships between the sheriff, the village of Priors Holston and the priory that once ruled it. As a simple task takes a turn to the political, what seems obvious isn't and what appears safe turns out to be more dangerous than he could imagine.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Book 2, SEASON OF THE FOX
4.5 stars
Raise the Hue and Cry!

A wealthy merchant has been murdered in his own home, and the suspect has fled to sanctuary in a local church. Enter Sir Faucon de Ramis, the king's new Servant of the Crown in the shire, to solve the murder, assisted by his prickly secretary, Brother Edmund.

As Faucon begins his hunt, the shire's new Crowner finds himself in the upside-down world of a woman's trade. Not only does the merchant's wife own the business--unheard of!--the suspect is the daughter's betrothed, or so the town believes. But what about the bloody shoe prints and missing tally sticks, and what does the sheriff have to gain?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Book 3, LOST INNOCENTS
4.6 stars
Into The Woods

A leper's daughter is found in the well of a dying hamlet and the only suspect has fled into Feckenham Forest. But the sun is setting and Warwickshire's sheriff is hunting his shire's new Crowner. That sends Sir Faucon de Ramis and Brother Edmund, his prickly clerk, racing for a nearby abbey only to meet the man he least wishes to see at the abbey gates. Before long, Faucon finds himself riding into the dark at Sir Alain's side as they hunt for yet another lost innocent.

Dead for the Money is the second in the Dead Detective series by Peg Herring. Per SYKM, the first two in this series appear to be conventionally published (I don't recognize the publisher myself, but am happy to defer to SYKM), although Kindle US lists a lot more titles in the series after the first two. In any case, this one has dropped to free at Kindle US. I haven't read this series by this author, but have read and enjoyed her Simon & Elizabeth historical series. (Paranormal is, with rare exceptions, just not my thing...)

link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B010R101XM

Spoiler:
Quote:
THIS IS A NEW EDITION OF THIS PARANORMAL MYSTERY, FIRST PUBLISHED IN 2012, WHEN IT WON BEST MYSTERY OF THE YEAR FROM EPIC

When Dead Detective Seamus is asked to investigate the death of wealthy businessman William Dunbar, he is more than willing. Seamus finds the Afterlife pleasant but a little boring, and he looks forward to chances to return to Life and find out for murder victims why they died and who is responsible. This time there's an additional request: Will he take a detective-in-training along? Reluctantly he agrees to meet Mildred, who seems charming if a little headstrong. They agree to work the case together, with Seamus in full command.

Suspects for Dunbar's possible murder include the man's family and staff, notably his beloved grandson Bud, who was with him when he fell from a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan. There's chemistry between Bud and Scarlet, an employee in the household, and Seamus wonders why they work so hard to keep it hidden. To Seamus' disgust, Mildred insists she must stop investigating and concentrate on Dunbar's adopted granddaughter. Brodie, a problem child devastated by the death of her beloved "Gramps," feels that no one on earth cares about her now, and Mildred insists her support is required to convince Brodie to go on. Seamus is disgusted, both with Millie's disregard for the rules of non-interference with the living and with himself for ignoring his instincts about her. If his disembodied spirit had the capability, he'd kick himself for agreeing to bring her along.

Despite Mildred's shenanigans, which create both humor and trouble, Seamus continues the investigation. Events soon spin out of control. A kidnapping leads to a desperate chase toward the Straits of Mackinac, where Brody and Bud find themselves in peril on the Mackinac Bridge.

Will Mildred become a lost soul? Will Brodie find the will to survive? Can Seamus help his host defeat the killer, or does his presence make things worse? Nothing is certain except the dire possibility that more innocent people will end up Dead for the Money.

Constable on the Prowl is the first (blurb) or second (SYKM) in the Constable Nick Series by Nicholas Rhea (pen name for Peter Walker). It is a US Kindle Countdown deal at $0.99 for about 1 1/2 more days.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Constable-Pro.../dp/B01IHMU2A0

Spoiler:
Quote:
Yorkshire, 1980’s.

Nick Rhea is a new recruit to Aidensfield police station.

Drawing the short straw as a newbie to the force, he is regularly covering the night duty patrol.

Despite this being the least popular shift amongst his peers, it is certainly proving to be the most enlightening patrol…

Set in an idyllic village you would assume that crime would be minimal.

You were wrong.

Entertaining characters keep the village alive. Especially the roguish Claude Jeremiah Greengrass with his ingenious ability to avoid the law.

Poachers, thefts and bizarre midnight escapades are rampant. Nick must prove his worth amongst his peers by thwarting these crimes.

Whilst also contending with the practical jokes carried out by his colleagues.

Can Nick withstand the small village life and gain the respect of the people he serves?

Or will he yearn for work in the big cities of the country.

Constable on the Prowl is an enlightening collection of memoirs that will remain with you for years.

The Good German is a non-series title by Joseph Kanon. It has dropped to $2.99 at Kindle US. Per SYKM, Kanon's better known (I think) first title, Los Alamos, was the winner of 1998 Edgar Award for Best First Novel.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Good-German-B.../dp/B00FO7RO9O

Spoiler:
Quote:
Set in Berlin just after the end of World War II, a brilliant thriller about the end of one war and the beginning of another, by the bestselling author of Los Alamos.

Berlin, 1945. Jake Geismar, former Berlin correspondent for CBS, has managed to wangle one of the coveted press slots for the Potsdam Conference. His assignment: a series of articles on the American occupation of postwar Berlin. His personal agenda: to find Lena, the German mistress he left behind at the outbreak of the war. When he stumbles on a murder--an American soldier washed up on the shore of the conference grounds--he thinks he has found the key that will unlock his Berlin story. What he finds instead is a larger story of corruption and intrigue reaching deep into the heart of the occupation and a city not only physically but morally devastatated, where children scavenge for food in the rubble, sex can be had for a cigarette, and the black market is the only means of survival.

Berlin at zero hour is like nowhere else--a tragedy, and a feverish party after the end of the world. And nothing is simple--not the murder of a soldier and not any of the lives, American and German, that Jake encounters as he tries to solve it. More unsolvable still is the larger crime that hangs over everything in 1945, a crime so huge it seems beyond punishment.

At once a murder mystery, a love story, and a riveting portrait of a unique time and place, The Good German is a historical thriller of the first rank.

The titles in James R. Benn's Billy Boyle series are all great deals at Kobo Canada with the unlimited use 50READ coupon (expires today), since Soho Crime is still couponable in Canada. They are all CAD $3.50, except the first, which is $1.79, so when you use the coupon, they come out to $1.75 and $0.90 respectively (plus tax).

I've read and enjoyed the first few titles in this series from the library, but haven't picked up many for myself since Soho Crime titles tend to be a bit pricey. So, I filled in all my gaps and have some happy reading ahead!

A couple of Michael Connelly/Harry Bosch titles, Trunk Music and The Drop, have dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US. And, when I went looking at Michael Connelly, I noticed that The Last Coyote has dropped to $2.99. So if you missed the £1.99 sale on lots of Connelly's Bosch books in the UK or the $2.99 sale on a few of his books in the US a while back, here's your chance to pick up a few. I also noticed a few collections of short stories at $2.99.

link for all (includes a couple of single short stories at $1.99 too): https://www.amazon.com/gp/search/?se...yword=-spanish

Oddly enough, I also noticed a few Spanish-language translations at $2.44 (oddly enough because when I've noticed foreign-language translations in the US, they tend to be more, not less, than the original English titles). And finally, I also noticed a lot of French translations at $3.99.

Not an "Ed Noon" reissue, but one from a different series

The Werewolf Walks Tonight (Satan Sleuth Book 2) by Michael Avallone

Deacon Williams' corpse hung upside down from the limb of a gnarled juniper tree, his throat ripped out. Murder: brutal, vicious, inhuman... the work of a mad dog, a wolf, a monster. Was the legend of the Fletcherville Werewolf a reality? By the time whatever it was had killed again, and a beautiful girl had disappeared, Philip St. George decided to intervene. There was work once more for... the Satan Sleuth.

Satan Sleuth Series (5 novels, 2 unpublished):

Fighting for reason and right against the Devil and his disciples... Satan Sleuth is an occult adventure series about Philip St. George, a masked avenger fighting the forces of darkness in the 1970s.
