I don't know if you were referring to just the downloadable Egyptology books, but I think that there are a total of 1273 pdf ebooks across all fields of study: http://www.metmuseum.org/research/me...mt=downloadpdf. This probably prompts the question of why I didn't just post that link to begin with, and be done with it. Well, I feel that people following the threads sometimes are overwhelmed by websites that are posted that give a ton of freebies, and because of that they don't even bother to visit the website or, if they do, don't want to have to go through the whole selection of ebooks. I didn't go through the whole selection of The Met's free ebooks, but I went through a lot. I thought that if I was going to pick out just one ebook to post, this one on the masterpieces would be the best because it probably would have the broadest appeal (you are well aware of how specialized and esoteric the great majority of their books are). BTW--you probably are aware of this list, but I'll mention it in case you're not. The University of Memphis (Tennessee) maintains a list of "Egyptology Books and Articles in PDF online" at http://www.memphis.edu/egypt/resourc...y_mar2015.html. With just 4157 items (I know that the amount of writing on ancient Egypt and Egyptology is enormous) listed, I don't know how comprehensive it is, but it's the best list on the subject that I've run across. If You Need or Want this Advanced Mathematics Ebook, You'll Save $78.36 over Amazon.
I'm in a pdf-finding mood and mode right now. I'm sorry, but I think that it's cool finding all of these pdf freebies. I hope that someone besides just me downloads them.
![]() You can get the pdf of The Elements of Advanced Mathematics, 3rd edition, by Steven G. Krantz, free, directly, by following this link. How good is the book? There just aren't enough ratings at Amazon or GoodReads to get any real help from one of them. The book is in its third edition, however, and that speaks well of it. I don't know if any of you can use it. Maybe one or more of you would like to download it to read and teach yourself the subject. Maybe you'll need it for a college class next semester, if so you'll save $78.36 over the e-textbook at Amazon. Can't use pdf on your ereader of choice? Don't want to use pdf on your ereader because pdf documents don't render well on it? For your convenience, here's a link to a webpage on Calibre's website where you can download it and then convert the unholy 1's and 0's out of that pdf. Don't click on the green button that says, "Start Install" or you'll get crapware on your computer. Click on the icon on the left that represents the type of computer on which you plan to use Calibre. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 12-08-2015 at 01:16 AM. |

Thanks for the information! I haven't used Calibre (I need to use it, but I have so many ebooks in so many formats (and places) now that I am intimidated by the prospect of converting them) and am really pretty unfamiliar with its capabilities and the issues in conversion. I shouldn't have spoken on that matter.

Yes, others may benefit from the list. But talk about specialized and esoteric! Most of the articles and books listed there make The Met's publications look like casual reading material. Speaking of the University of Memphis . . . If anyone else is interested in ancient Egypt, they might be interested in knowing that they do have a collection of Egyptian antiquities there--a museum, I suppose. Unfortunately, I don't know how good the collection is, from personal experience. I lived, for several years, a little less than 2 hours away and one day finally got over there but, as "luck" would have it, they happened to be closed for renovation or something. UPDATE: Curiosity about the size and quality of the museum's collection got the better of me, so I went to the museum's (they call the facility an "exhibit") webpage (http://www.memphis.edu/egypt/exhibit/index.php) just now. Prominently shown near the top of the page was this: "The Egyptian Gallery is currently CLOSED for HVAC renovations." The moral of the story: call ahead or, at least, check their website before making the trip! Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 12-08-2015 at 11:48 AM. |

FREE from Rockefeller University Press--The Hostage Brain. In Pdf, EPub or Mobi!
The Rockefeller University Press is offering, free, The Hostage Brain, by Bruce S. McEwen and Harold M. Schmeck, Jr. It's 323 pages.
For this book, you can choose your favorite digital flavor: pdf, ePbub, and/or Kindle (mobi). You can even get all three, if you'd like (I tried, and it works). Here are a couple of book descriptions from the book's webpage: The Hostage Brain illuminates for the lay audience--through clear prose and striking illustrations--what the brain is, how it functions, and how it is often subverted. and Many people are vaguely aware of the power of the human brain but few are aware of its vulnerability to quirks of temperature, chemistry, infection, and physical impact. The human brain can be captured by the flood of hormones it sends pulsing through the body or taken hostage by outside events and even its own thoughts. The Hostage Brain illuminates for the lay audience--through clear prose and striking illustrations--what the brain is, how it functions, and how it is often subverted. It reveals the most recent advances in brain research and describes key discoveries together with the social and political implications that surround them. Unfortunately, there are not enough ratings at Amazon (just one) or GoodReads (none) to get a good read (no pun intended) on the quality of this book. The only other book by author McEwen that I could find gets high ratings at both Amazon and GoodReads, however. This is a very valuable deal. The book is apparently not available as an ebook at Amazon or anywhere else. Secondly, there is a good little cost for a physical copy. Both the retail price and the price at Amazon for the hardcover is $19.99. You can get a new paperback copy for $13.30 at B&N. I suppose that you would like to have a link to the book's webpage at Rockefeller University Press? Here it is: http://books.rupress.org/catalog/book/hostage-brain. Grab a free pdf of the book English Garden Cities: An Introduction.
It is published by an agency called English Heritage and available from from a website called Historic England. It is 117 pages long. I would describe it as the kind of book that would make a wonderful coffee table book, if it was a physical book. It is loaded with color (mostly, it looks like) and black-and-white photos. There are also very helpful maps, mostly in color, placed in just the right places. The text is aesthetically pleasing. Mobilereaders across the Pond may enjoy this the most. However, I've found this book immensely interesting, myself. I have never had the privilege of visiting England, and knew nothing about these lovely English garden cities until perusing this book. Go to this direct link to get your copy. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 12-10-2015 at 10:17 PM. |
