The Red and the Black: A Chronicle of 1830 (Modern Library Classics)
by Stendhal is $4.99
. This is a new and praised translation by Burton Raffel (though the cover is weirdly sexy).

Quote:
A Major New Translation

The Red and the Black, Stendhal’s masterpiece, is the story of Julien Sorel, a young dreamer from the provinces, fueled by Napoleonic ideals, whose desire to make his fortune sets in motion events both mesmerizing and tragic. Sorel’s quest to find himself, and the doomed love he encounters along the way, are delineated with an unprecedented psychological depth and realism. At the same time, Stendhal weaves together the social life and fraught political intrigues of post–Napoleonic France, bringing that world to unforgettable, full-color life. His portrait of Julien and early-nineteenth-century France remains an unsurpassed creation, one that brilliantly anticipates modern literature.

Neglected during its time, The Red and the Black has assumed its rightful place as one of the world’s great books, and Burton Raffel’s extraordinary new translation, coupled with an enlightening Introduction by Diane Johnson, helps it shine more brightly than ever before.

I've always thought I might want to read this some day.

This 2003 translation by Raffel is priced just right...so...I bought it!

Thank you!

Now £1.99 at Kindle UK. Note that Tortilla Flat is one of the books in the Penguin Classics omnibus, The Short Novels of John Steinbeck, which was on sale in the US a while back, so check carefully before you buy.

ADD:
And BTW, the omnibus in the US is still not badly priced at $7.99...

Not my favorite of his books, but I did enjoy it. He mixes his love of King Arthur and the down and outs in California farming communities:

Adopting the structure and themes of the Arthurian legend, John Steinbeck created a “Camelot” on a shabby hillside above the town of Monterey, California, and peopled it with a colorful band of knights. At the center of the tale is Danny, whose house, like Arthur’s castle, becomes a gathering place for men looking for adventure, camaraderie, and a sense of belonging—men who fiercely resist the corrupting tide of honest toil and civil rectitude.

Bloodsucking Fiends, by Christopher Moore, is on sale at Amazon for $1.99. This was the book that got me into Moore's work. It's a very, very funny vampire story, if that isn't too much of an oxymoron. Moore's books don't go on sale very often, so if you've been curious to check him out this is a good entry point.

(this was also getting posted in the science fiction thread.)

Quote:
Jody never asked to become a vampire. But when she wakes up under an alley Dumpster with a badly burned arm, an aching back, superhuman strength, and a distinctly Nosferatuan thirst, she realizes the decision has been made for her.

Making the transition from the nine-to-five grind to an eternity of nocturnal prowlings is going to take some doing, however, and that's where C. Thomas Flood fits in. A would-be Kerouac from Incontinence, Indiana, Tommy (to his friends) is biding his time night-clerking and frozen-turkey bowling in a San Francisco Safeway. But all that changes when a beautiful undead redhead walks through the door...and proceeds to rock Tommy's life—and afterlife—in ways he never thought possible.

Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston is on sale for $2.99 at Amazon US.

Amazon US

Quote:
One of the most important and enduring books of the twentieth century, Their Eyes Were Watching God brings to life a Southern love story with the wit and pathos found only in the writing of Zora Neale Hurston. Out of print for almost thirty years—due largely to initial audiences’ rejection of its strong black female protagonist—Hurston’s classic has since its 1978 reissue become perhaps the most widely read and highly acclaimed novel in the canon of African-American literature.

It’s really late to be posting this, but one of today’s Kindle Daily Deals is Robertson Davies’s Cornish trilogy for only $3.99.

https://smile.amazon.com/Cornish-Tri...dp/B088YVY11N/

These are wonderful novels, by my favorite Canadian author, and to get all three books for only four bucks is a fantastic deal. They’re witty, absorbing, and have much to say about the zeitgeist and if you’ve ever thought about trying Davies, they’re a good entry. I couldn’t recommend these more highly.

Selected Short Stories by William Faulkner is on sale for $1.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
William Faulkner was a master of the short story. Most of the pieces in this collection are drawn from the greatest period in his writing life, the fifteen or so years beginning in 1929, when he published The Sound and the Fury. They explore many of the themes found in the novels and feature characters of small-town Mississippi life that are uniquely Faulkner’s.

In “A Rose for Emily,” the first of his stories to appear in a national magazine, a straightforward, neighborly narrator relates a tale of love, betrayal, and murder. The vicious family of the Snopes trilogy turns up in “Barn Burning,” about a son’s response to the activities of his arsonist father. And Jason and Caddy Compson, two other inhabitants of Faulkner’s mythical Yoknapatawpha County, are witnesses to the terrorizing of a pregnant black laundress in “That Evening Sun.” These and the other stories gathered here attest to the fact that Faulkner is, as Ralph Ellison so aptly noted, “the greatest artist the South has produced.”

FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENED BEFORE JAMIE MET CLAIRE IN THIS BRILLIANT NEW OUTLANDER SHORT STORY.

1740: Young Jamie Fraser has left Scotland and, with his best friend Ian Murray, is running with a band of mercenaries in France.

Both men have good reason not to go back to their homeland: both are nursing wounds, and despite their best efforts to remedy the situation, both are still virgins.

So when a Jewish doctor hires them to escort his granddaughter to Paris, they readily agree. Both men are instantly drawn to the beautiful young lady.

What neither know is that their lives and their friendships are about to become infinitely more complicated - and a lot more dangerous ...
