Luckily, I live on the other side of the province (which, ironically, while closer to sea, is almost 2m higher, almost 1m above sea level instead of 1m below...) and we don't have much of a problem with water that should be going to the sea. Lots of ditches here still and those are not even half full. Though, they will be closing the coupures in the town close by. But that's mostly because of the northwestern storm in combination with the high tide. There was less rain than was predicted so the pressure wasn't as great as they feared it would be and the water stayed just (and I mean just!) below the top of the dike... http://static3.ad.nl/static/photo/20...ge_1062957.jpg I did hear one dike did break, not the one they were afraid of this morning, but one in the neighbouring province... Remember, these aren't sea dikes (those are still standing firm as the presure is coming from the inside out), but inland dikes to protect the polders... (love it when the English word is the Dutch one ) |

Small update: Immediate crisis: about 800 people will be evacuated (about 30km away from where I live). A dike surrounding a canal is leaking... Water is simply "pushed" through under the dike. This will undermine the dike. And as it's a canal, the water is about 1.5 meter above ground level. So, if it breaks, there'll be a very large area which will flood... Nothing will happen to me personally, except that it's on my way to work. So, I'm staying safely home today! (the road is closed to help the evacuation). |

Isolated thunderstorms moving through today. We decided not to crate the older dog because he gets so stiff and can't move around well in there anymore. If we get a bad spell of thunder, I hope he doesn't eat some new part of the house.

Freezing rain overnight causing sporadic, widespread power outages, bus cancellations and school closings. The branches on our poor trees are weighed down with the ice. On some of the trees the tops are bent right over. They should recover as long as we don't get too much more rain/freezing rain and the temperature rises so the ice melts off.

We're in a pattern of unnaturally warm, rainy spells followed by arctic air masses. Monday we had the windows open. Today it's freezing! Literally!

We're finally having some winter weather here, or at least coldish. The sunNy weather in not typical Parisian winter, but I'm not complaining. I am also grateful for the cold, because since they "fixed" my building's central heating last Wednesday, I have been living in a slow cooker. Now that the outside temperature has dropped a few degrees, the temperature inside is bearable again.

It actually kind of almost looked like what could possibly be called "winter" this morning. There was some frost on the car windows...

A few inches of snow yesterday. About -2c this morning. Camo is for exercising the squirrels. |
