Our casual days here at work are all summer long, unfortunately it is limited to not having to wear a tie - I'd kill for shorts, a t-shirt, and my sandals!! Even just once a week would be ok.

Early at work this morning before first shift arrived I was attacked by wasps. I didn't see them coming, and in my sudden desperate attempt to escape them, I tripped over my bulky-ass safety shoes and took a tumble. I then rolled over a few times to get away from them, but still got a couple of stings.

Why did they assume that behavior wouldn't tick me off? I found a can of spray paint and returned to the scene of the crime where the varmints had established their fort and initiated a frontal assault. They came again, but without the element of surprise, I was more than a match for them. Every time one came too close, it got a makeover in white. When I had driven off the bulk of them, I closed in on the hole where their hideout was located and saturated it with paint to the best of my ability. Since there is plenty of room behind the entrance to their lair, I can't be sure all of them were completely persuaded to abandon ship, but I'm hoping. The additional stings were worth it.

Now I'm home and my rib cage on my right side is killing me. I felt a pain when I fell, but it didn't seem too bad. Now it hurts to breathe too deeply or bend over. Even getting up is a chore. I know what's happened. I've been through this before, and I know the drill. Either I've cracked a rib or torn a ligamen. It doesn't matter which, as the only cure for either is to take it easy until it heals.

The sad thing is that this war was unnecessary. Had they not made the first move with that pre-emptive strike, I would have been perfectly content to allow them then to live in peace. Now their little white corpses litter the battlefield, and I'm afraid to cough!

That hole where they lived, was it in the ground? Good idea about the paint spray can.

When that happens I just dumps a cup of gas in front of the opening and set fire. Warrior wasps that come out lose their wings as they burn in a flash. The gas will burn long enough until they're controlled.

When they're up like hornets, I come back at night when they don't fly and wrap the nest in a garbage bag to dispose of them. If they're in a hole on a building, I take a vacuum cleaner, add all the rigid hose I can find and set the end right next to the entrance and capture them until I don't hear them tumbling inside the hose anymore. Not to forget, plug the hose after turning the vacuum off...

or the (white anglo saxon protestant) WASPs

What a story Tom, the courage, the drama, the up and down roller coaster ride of emotions!! We had them in the basement of our old house a couple of times, and I'm allergic so there was no heroic stand for me. In fact it was more like the shrieking of a scared little girl as I ran up the basement steps...

I sympathize with the ribs too - there is no pain quite like that!

Hope it heals quickly! At least you took a few of them with you!

Thanks. I like your idea about the vacuum cleaner; I've caught flies that way. Because of environmental concerns, we aren't allowed to bring insecticides to work, and setting a gasoline fire on a government facility is probably frowned upon, but if they're still there, I may try the vacuum angle tonight!

One of my co-workers said it was a pair of blasted "safety" shoes that caused her to trip and injure herself in the dry-dock a few years back.

I had a similar problem with ants in their reproducing period (they tend to fly). But it was indoors, so paint was out of the question. But I found a hair lack and a lighter. The rest was stinky. I hate it, when there is no choice but either exterminating the insects, or letting them live in you kitchen...

I too am allergic to the little b*****ds - when doing yard work I always carry a can of that spray that shoots killer foam 25' and guarantees instant knock-down! Had to get rid of 2 nests on my front porch last month - they're quite aggressive about your just walking by.

Tom - hope it's not a rib - do you have an Ace bandage? Sometimes pressure can make it feel better! Ice down the stings first!
