Even if I don't frequent a particular piece of software's support forums, I do make it a point to get the lay of the land before applying any major updates (3 to 4, 4 to 5, etc...). Saves a lot of trouble in the long run. Especially when 3rd-party extensions are in play.

The downside of having this conversation in this particular thread is that each new post has the unfortunate side-effect of causing people who know there's an issue with this plugin (RE calibre 5) to hope there's been a new release of the plugin to address it. This is, afterall, the "There's a new version of the plugin" announcement thread and not the "There's NOT a new version of the plugin" announcement thread.

Once you open a library in Calibre 5 it changes it in a way that is potentially incompatible with calibre versions prior to 4.23. So if you revert do not use an older version of calibre than that one.

From "Backwards incompatibilities" in New in calibre 5.0:
Yes, that's what I mean. Just re-install the previous version.

Of course, you can also simply use the stand alone version of DeDRM.

In general, it's a good idea to do a full back up of your calibre folder before updating, especially if it's a major update like this is. I have the advantage that I have multiple macs, so I can run the older version on my laptop and then copy the dedrm'ed files to my desktop if I need to. But, I'll probably just hold off until they get things working again.

I haven't checked in the past few weeks but the last time I looked at the github for the tools significant contributions were being made to Python3 support. We should remember that those contributing are giving there time and expertise freely and without payment. Including Laura in dealing with users problems. I am in awe of her patience as she deals with the same issues again and again.

If you use the tools I'd strongly suggest not upgrading to 5 until the tools are working with it. I doubt it will be very long.

I see your point. On the other hand, the actual title just says "new version,". So these posts may appropriately be responding "no, not yet."

Maybe there is a "tools news" thread we should subscribe to?

Only from version 6.7.0 but there were issues with the stand alone tools for a couple of the versions before that.

Based on the file dates on my PC the last reliable version of the stand alone tools is either version 6.6.0 or 6.5.5.

The fact is that this--and other plugins--were going to stop working with calibre 5 should really only be news to people who never visit the calibre forums.
I check every day, even though I rarely post anything (I am mostly on knitting boards). I opened Calibre yesterday, and thought about upgrading, but I really wanted to read a book, so I decided to wait. So I'm lucky this topic made it to the top today,

I believe it was 6.5.5. The addition of KFX support required extra dependencies that weren’t easy to get/install properly on Windows.

Hum, I guess they did. I've got the most recent stand alone tools on my desktop, so I never really noticed. Been a while since I actually used the stand alone.

Care to try them and report back?

In the past, apprentice alf has said that other things "aren't supported" (I believe), but they still worked.

Try it yourself. They're no longer updated but still available on the previous releases page at the GitHub. Last version with standalones is 6.6.3. But as ilovejedd suggested, version 6.5.5 is probably the better option. You don't want to be decrypting KFX format with the standalone anyway.

If wanted to try it myself, I wouldn't have asked.

I was interested in the EPUB and Kindle non-kfx formats.

Well, there's no reason they shouldn't work as they did before. They used the same exact underlying Python scripts as the plugin. Not supported just means no longer updated and not included in the last couple releases. Also means if you ask for help with them at Alf's blog or Harper's GitHub, I'm gonna tell you to use the plugin!

I never tried them with EPUB. Kindle non-kfx works fine. I ran Battleground through it for grins this morning.
