I just bought from Sony the title listed below. I also used my 25% off coupon and the book was very inexpensive. I bought:

The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, by Junot Diaz.

Apparently, it won the Pulitzer Prize and is highly regarded. Anyone else read this novel?

I'm looking forward to reading it as soon as I finish Bridge of Sighs, by Richard Russo.

He does have that silly grin that I, too, also associate with those Enzyte commericals. However, the origin goes back a litter further.

Just finished 'A Cure for Night' by Justin Peacock. Very good read. His character is a public defender in Brooklyn working a murder case that occurred in the projects. Well paced, well written and he did an especially good job capturing the 'hood rap.

We have TOS, TNG, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise, Vanguard, SCE/CoE, Titan, & New Frontier for book series.

Vanguard is a series that takes place during the TOS time but not featuring the TOS cast. It mostly takes place abord space station Vanguard.

Titan is Captain Riker's ship Titan and he's now married to Deanna.

SCE/CoE is an eBook series that is also being reprinted in omnibus form. It is Starfleet Corps of Engineers/Corps of Engineers. It's about a ship of Engineers. Quite good actually and the stories are short to medium and that makes them an easy read if you just want something not novel length.

New Frontier was created by Peter David and takes place in the TNG time. It's a new crew and quite interesting.

The question is which trek series do you like? There are lots of places to actually start. So knowing what you like can really help figure out where to start.

For the TOS, I'll give you something I just finished reading recently that I thought was quite good.

These take place before the first Episode of TOS and features Gary Mitchell from Academy days up to the first episode.

There are alot of good books in the original series list that should be pretty inexpensive to get. Stick with the better authors like Diane Duane, Peter David, Vonda McIntyre, AC Crispin, Dian Carey.

I just finished a book by Canadian author Cheryl Kaye Tardiff. Interesting combination of adventure of hi-tech thriller. I give if 4 out of 5. (available in Kindle and Paperback).

The River – Hang on for the ride of your life!

Having moved on seven years after her missing father is assumed dead, Delia Hawthorne “Del” is visited by an aged stranger. Convinced the man is deranged, Del calls security to have him removed from her university classroom. “Delly it’s me” he says. And though it can’t be, it is. He is professor Schroeder, a colleague gone missing with her father so many years earlier, only he is much older than he should be. Schroeder tells her that her father is still alive and hands over a coded journal just before collapsing unconscious.

At the hospital, Del learns that Schroeder is suffering from a rare form of Progeria – a rapid aging disease. He will soon die and no one knows what has caused his condition. Jake Kerrigan, a research specialist for Bio-Tec Canada, the same company Del’s father worked for, is brought in to consult.

Convinced by Schroeder and his journal that her father is still alive, Del decides to retrace her father’s footsteps by traveling to the mysterious Canadian South Nahanni River – a river shrouded in legend and known for the occasional headless skeletons discovered along its banks.

Del, her ex-boyfriend, Jake Kerrigan, and a cadre of others led by their Dene guide travel and sometimes battle the beautiful and treacherous Nahanni River. Taming the river while searching for her captive father is exhausting . Add to this Del’s exacerbation of her Multiple Scelorsis and the journey is emotionally and mentally taxing. This may be why I found Del’s frequent romantic and lustful thoughts regarding Jake somewhat out of place given the situation.

In the second half of the book, the team find the hidden location of Del’s father. Without giving away too many plot surprises, this section reminded me of a cross between James Bond’s “Dr. No” and a more recent movie “The Island”. There is the hi-tech bad-guy lair controlled by a nefarious conspiratorial organization looking to gain the ultimate control over human life.

Cheryl Kaye Tardif’s description of the Nahanni expedition is exceptional, demonstrating her considerable research and command of this remote Canadian region. “The River” is a wonderful adventure. Readers will not be disappointed in what could be the ride of their lives.

I finished the last book in the Crown of Star series by Kate Elliott.

Unimpressive final.
I am disappointed with the last book in the series. Something about it doesn't sit quite right with me. There were ups and many downs in this volume. The whole Sanglant/daimone situation was very awkward and artificial. The epilogue was ..meh. The whole series were about Sanglant and Liath and what do we get at the end? I expected a lot more.
