A book on Roman history written by the man responsible for the History of Rome podcast. It is available for $3.99 at Amazon.com.

Mike Duncan The Storm Before the Storm: The Beginning of the End of the Roman Republic

This isn't simply another drab Kindle title. This book is Great on Kindle. It will give you a 25% promo credit for use on other GoK books. Will also use current GoK credits you may have already acquired.

The Reluctant Belligerent: American Entry into World War II by Robert A. Divine

Did America’s passive foreign policy in the 1930s contribute to the onset of the Second World War?

Would early and sustained American support have contained the expansive thrust of the Axis?

Was the nation’s security jeopardized by lack of leadership?

First published in 1965 by McGraw-Hill, Inc.

Robert A. Divine joined the faculty of the University of Texas in 1954 as a professor of history. He served as Chairman of the Department of History and the Committee on International Studies, and a member of the interim committee that helped with the organisation of the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University. In addition, he served as president of the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations and authored eleven books. He retired in 1996.

That edition gets a 3.52 (25) rating at GoodReads. That's a good rating for those folks over there.

Spotify Non-Fiction PODCASTS.

I've used Spotify (the free, ad-supported version) for years. I've found it to be a great website for streaming songs. Here lately (Southern for "lately" ), I've found it very helpful for listening to some tracks that are on classical music albums that someone is giving away, in order to decide whether or not to download the albums.

But I did not realize, until yesterday, that Spotify has a passel and plethora of podcasts (yes, that was an intentional alliteration ).

I'm about to finish listening to one of their podcasts while writing this message, and I haven't heard any advertisement yet, as I do listening to Spotify's music, although some visual ads have appeared. But that's the price that we have to pay to keep from paying for a premium membership.

To access the subjects and titles of the podcasts, if you're a member of Spotify (again, the basic membership is free (but not free of advertisements )), first sign in. Then look at the "Your Library" menu on the far left. You should see "Podcasts," at the very end of the list. Click on that link. I recommend that you click on the (very-obvious) " Go to Browse"button that appears on the subsequent page. On the webpage that appears, drill all the way down to the bottom of the page, and you will see icons for several different categories, including non-fiction. Here are the non-fiction categories; click on one(s) on that webpage that interest you:
- Educational.
- Stories.
- News & Politics.
- Arts & Entertainment.
- Sports & Recreation.
- Music.
- Lifestyle & Health.
In fact, there are only two categories that are not non-fiction.

There are a huge number of podcasts in each category, if the "Educational" category is any indication.

You can sign up for Spotify here, among probably other Spotify webpages.

Thanks for your post; it's a good candidate for cross-posting to the Media Deals (non-eBook/non-audiobook) thread.

I, too, use Spotify (for all manner of audio content, and I've linked it to Shazam). Also, FYI, Spotify is currently offering discounted deals on three categories of service:
  • Spotify Premium: $0.99 for 3 months, for one account
  • Spotify Family: $14.99/month, for multiple accounts
  • Spotify Student ("Spotify Premium for Students, now with Hulu Limited Commercial Plan"): $4.99/month for both, cancel anytime

Do you happen to know how many "places" that a post can be cross-posted? If there is a limit, how much does (an) additional post(s) (i.e., one or more above the limit) have to differ with the original post in order not to be considered a cross-post but a new one?

The reason that I'm asking is because, with some fairly minor changes, I could have added a fiction post, in order to cover the two categories of fiction podcasts.

If neither you nor anyone else reading this knows the answer, I'll look it up in the rules.

Thanks for the additional information about Spotify vis a vis the membership plans. I didn't mention any of them, because I recently posted information about the Spotify 3-month/99-cent deal, and someone posted something to the effect of, "oh, that deal's been around for a long time!" I translated that to mean, "oh, everyone already knows about that one!" It might have been another service with another subscription plan, I don't know, but you get the point. If there's anything that I hate, it's looking stoopid.

You can always PM a mod instead of guessing and making assumptions.

The answer is that a book can be cross-posted in as many places as it fits, but you can't also post a new dedicated thread. Changing a post slightly in an attempt to circumvent the rules would be frowned upon (as would any attempt to get around the rules, which are there for a reason), which is why you should ask. As a general guideline, if you're trying to get around the rules, don't, and it's silly when you're making up the rule in the first place.

Thanks.

I didn't express myself well. Let me see if I can do it better.

My point was that it wouldn't be necessary to change the post much. All of the information that I would have put in a post about the two fiction categories was already in the post about the non-fiction categories. I could change the wording, rearrange paragraphs, and things like that, but I wouldn't think that all of that was necessary just to change the focus from non-fiction categories to fiction categories.

I don't know if I made myself clearer just now, but I assure you that there was not even the thought of trying to circumvent the rules.

I read the following as a question about how you could change a post sufficiently so that it didn't fall under a putative limit on crossposts.

Rephrasing on my part: a crosspost is a crosspost, that is, if it's about the same deal, it's a crosspost. Changing the language doesn't affect that, but the rules don't forbid it anyway.

I get why you asked about cross-posting and don't interpret your question as an attempt to subvert any rules. In fact, I read your question as an attempt to do the opposite: e.g., to understand and avoid breaking rules (which rules should be but do not appear to be written anywhere that's easy to find). If there's a written rule governing cross-posting, then I'd be grateful if someone'd post its URL here.

You're welcome. The poster's comment you referenced and your reaction to it both ignore two salient facts:
  1. What's old hat for some MobileReaders might be news to some others.
  2. "You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time." - Abraham Lincoln

There's a link to the Guidelines at the bottom of every page. Cross-posting is covered:
3. Duplication

Do not post the same discussion in more than one forum. Try to pick the most relevant forum for your post.
If it's been a few days since the last comment in your thread and you haven't received a suitable answer to your question, you may bump your thread by commenting in it. You must not ask the same question in a new thread in the same forum.
If you receive no replies, and you think you may have chosen the wrong forum, report your post and ask the moderators to move it to the right forum.

Paul, we do make an exception for cross-posting in the Deals forum.
