The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet by David Mitchell is $1.99 on Amazon.com
Quote:
The year is 1799, the place Dejima in Nagasaki Harbor, the “high-walled, fan-shaped artificial island” that is the Japanese Empire’s single port and sole window onto the world, designed to keep the West at bay; the farthest outpost of the war-ravaged Dutch East Indies Company; and a de facto prison for the dozen foreigners permitted to live and work there. To this place of devious merchants, deceitful interpreters, costly courtesans, earthquakes, and typhoons comes Jacob de Zoet, a devout and resourceful young clerk who has five years in the East to earn a fortune of sufficient size to win the hand of his wealthy fiancée back in Holland.

But Jacob’s original intentions are eclipsed after a chance encounter with Orito Aibagawa, the disfigured daughter of a samurai doctor and midwife to the city’s powerful magistrate. The borders between propriety, profit, and pleasure blur until Jacob finds his vision clouded, one rash promise made and then fatefully broken. The consequences will extend beyond Jacob’s worst imaginings. As one cynical colleague asks, “Who ain’t a gambler in the glorious Orient, with his very life?”

There are some fantastic books available as Kindle Daily Deals today; I won’t link to them, but here’s a sampling of them, books I loved (there will be a couple more in non-fiction):
  • What’s Bred in the Bone by Robertson Davies
  • Suite Francaise by Irene Némirovsky
  • The Stories of Ray Bradbury by Ray Bradbury

What’s Bred in the Bone by my favorite Canadian author is the second book of a trilogy and the best, although the others are also excellent. It can be read as a stand-alone.

The Bradbury collection, a curated selection from a host of his books, is over a thousand pages in the hardcover. Who wouldn’t want this for dipping into?

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (Perennial Classics)
by Betty Smith $1.99 price good until 7/19

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (Perennial Classics) - Kindle edition by Smith, Betty. Literature & Fiction Kindle eBooks @ Amazon.com.

https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/a-t...ws-in-brooklyn

A PBS Great American Read Top 100 Pick
The beloved American classic about a young girl's coming-of-age at the turn of the twentieth century.
From the moment she entered the world, Francie Nolan needed to be made of stern stuff, for the often harsh life of Williamsburg demanded fortitude, precocity, and strength of spirit. Often scorned by neighbors for her family’s erratic and eccentric behavior—such as her father Johnny’s taste for alcohol and Aunt Sissy’s habit of marrying serially without the formality of divorce—no one, least of all Francie, could say that the Nolans’ life lacked drama. By turns overwhelming, sublime, heartbreaking, and uplifting, the Nolans’ daily experiences are tenderly threaded with family connectedness and raw with honesty. Betty Smith has, in the pages of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, captured the joys of humble Williamsburg life-from “junk day” on Saturdays, when the children of Francie’s neighborhood traded their weekly take for pennies, to the special excitement of holidays, bringing cause for celebration and revelry. Betty Smith has artfully caught this sense of exciting life in a novel of childhood, replete with incredibly rich moments of universal experiences—a truly remarkable achievement for any writer.

I haven't read The Leopard, by Giuseppe Tomasi Di Lampedusa, but it looks really interesting, and its Wikipedia entry indicates that it won Italy's Strega prize in 1959 and that the Observer named it one of their 10 best historical novels back in 2012. Now an English translation is on sale at Kindle UK today for £0.99 as part of the Daily Deal. (And, in Kindle's often amusing but rarely appropriate genre-switching, it's ranked as the "#1 Best Seller in Cat, Dog & Animal Humour"...sigh!)

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Leopard-Rev...dp/B0041RRH6S/
Kindle UK/Smile: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/Leopard-R...dp/B0041RRH6S/

Spoiler:
Quote:
The Leopard is a modern classic which tells the spellbinding story of a decadent, dying Sicilian aristocracy threatened by the approaching forces of democracy and revolution.

'There is a great feeling of opulence, decay, love and death about it' Rick Stein

In the spring of 1860, Fabrizio, the charismatic Prince of Salina, still rules over thousands of acres and hundreds of people, including his own numerous family, in mingled splendour and squalor. Then comes Garibaldi's landing in Sicily and the Prince must decide whether to resist the forces of change or come to terms with them.

'Every once in a while, like certain golden moments of happiness, infinitely memorable, one stumbles on a book or a writer, and the impact is like an indelible mark. Lampedusa's The Leopard, his only novel, and a masterpiece, is such a work' Independent

INCLUDES RECENTLY DISCOVERED NEW MATERIAL

An Outlander Collection: Books 1-3 contains exactly what it sounds like - the first three titles in the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon: Outlander, Voyager, and Dragonfly in Amber. The collection has dropped to £0.99 at Kindle UK right now. If you need even one of these, this is probably a good buy, since the individual titles don't go on sale all that often.

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01N3QIGMB
Kindle UK/Smile: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01N3QIGMB

Spoiler:
Quote:
Read the first three books in the million-copy bestselling Outlander series that inspired the TV show.

What if your future was the past?

Book 1: Outlander
1946, and Claire Randall goes to the Scottish Highlands with her husband Frank. It’s a second honeymoon, a chance to learn how war has changed them and to re-establish their loving marriage.

But one afternoon, Claire walks through a circle of standing stones and vanishes into 1743, where the first person she meets is a British army officer - her husband’s six-times great-grandfather.

Unfortunately, Black Jack Randall is not the man his descendant is, and while trying to escape him, Claire falls into the hands of a gang of Scottish outlaws, and finds herself a Sassenach - an outlander - in danger from both Jacobites and Redcoats.

Marooned amid danger, passion and violence, her only chance of safety lies in Jamie Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior. What begins in compulsion becomes urgent need, and Claire finds herself torn between two very different men, in two irreconcilable lives.

Book 2: Dragonfly in Amber
For twenty years Claire Randall has kept her secrets. But now she is returning with her grown daughter to the majesty of Scotland's mist-shrouded hills. Here Claire plans to reveal a truth as stunning as the events that gave it birth: about the mystery of an ancient circle of standing stones, about a love that transcends the boundaries of time, and about James Fraser, a warrior whose gallantry once drew the young Claire from the security of her century to the dangers of his.

Now a legacy of blood and desire will test her beautiful daughter as Claire's spellbinding journey continues in the intrigue-ridden court of Charles Edward Stuart, in a race to thwart a doomed uprising, and in a desperate fight to save both the child and the man she loves.

Book 3: Voyager
Jamie Fraser is lying on the battlefield of Culloden, where he rises wounded, to face execution or imprisonment. Either prospect pales beside the pain of loss - his wife is gone. Forever.

But sometimes forever is shorter than one thinks. In 1746, Claire Fraser made a perilous journey through time, leaving her young husband to die at Culloden, in order to protect their unborn child. In 1968, Claire has just been struck through the heart, discovering that Jamie Fraser didn’t die in battle.

But where is Jamie now? With the help of her grown daughter, Claire sets out to find the man who was her life - and might be once again.

Sharpe's Siege is the 18th or 19th (depending on whether you count a couple of novellas) in Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe series. My son, who is really into military history (and fiction), loved this series. Siege has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002UZDTGA
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/sharpe-s-siege-9

Spoiler:
Quote:
Sharpe's mission has seemed simple: capture a small unguarded French coastal fort, cripple Napoleon's supply lines, and retreat across the sea. But behind the lines, Sharpe's old enemy, Pierre Ducos, awaits Sharpe's arrival with a battalion of French soldiers and a vicious commanding general who keeps the scalps of his dead enemies as trophies.

Outmaneuvered by Ducos's treachery and abandoned by his own navy, Sharpe has only two choices: to escape with the aid of the charming, unscrupulous American mercenary, Cornelius Killick, or die.

Moore is one of the few authors that can literally get me laughing out loud. I highly recommend just about anything by him.

I was laughing out loud when I first read Blood Sucking Fiends: A Love Story. My wife thought I was nuts. After I finished I handed it to her and she was the one laughing out loud.
