Well done, Mike.

I'm currently at seven read and three 'bought' (subscriptions really). Not counting freebies, of course.

Oh yes I'm an addict too. As if I didn't have enough paper books in my TBR pile before I got my reader, now that I have my reader I've tripled that amount. I've enough to last me about 10 years I think, without buying any more. But I tend to have withdrawals if it's been more a week and I haven't bought an ebook.

Welcome to the addicts' support thread. As I've mentioned before, there are a couple of guidelines help me to reduce my ebook buying (375 ebooks in my TBR pile at the moment!)
  • I put books I want on a wish list rather than buying them
  • I try to only buy books when they are both on my wish list (or a favourite author) and at a good discount.

And, of course, I don't count freebies.

I've just bought a couple more books from the Kindle store. They were cheap!

But were they on your wishlist or from a favourite author and on a special offer?

There are lots of cheap ebooks around. The trick is to only buy when you

(a) run out of ebooks in your TBR pile
or
(b) a book you really want is available at a limited time special offer price
or
(c) it's a book you've been waiting for in a series you're reading and it's unlikely to become available cheaper in the foreseeable future.

There's really no other legitimate reason for buying an ebook.

You forgot:
(d) Someone was kind enough to give you a giftcard
or
(e) You were sleep-shopping (or taken over by book-loving aliens) and didn't notice the purchase until after the 7-day return period had passed.

Hey, it could happen!

A wonderful person recently gave me an Amazon gift card, and while I spent the majority of it on practical needs, I saved enough to splurge on an ebook or two. Haven't bought them yet, the selection process is half the fun!

IMO, even a gift card balance should be saved until one of my criteria is fulfilled.

I won't comment on sleep-shopping.

The one that usually gets me to break my resolution is a favourite author whose latest is just out. At an outrageous price, of course. For example, I know I'm going to buy the next Dana Stabenow book next month. In spite of the $12.99 price it will have. And I know if I just wait and read other things, it will eventually drop to under $10. But I still can't resist.

None of the above, unfortunately.

I peruse Amazon and if I see something I like the look of, I wishlist it so that I don't forget it. Every so often I then go through my wishlist and see if anything shouts at me to buy it and this time two books did.

In this case it was Zombie Fallout by Mark Tufo, The World House by Guy Adams both of which were a couple of quid each, and Replica by Lexi Revellian which was a freebie.

Oh well. It's done now.

I think it's open season on gift cards myself. Gift, y'know, why not make it splurgey? Otherwise it's as if someone offered to pay your electric bill. Nice and all that, but where's the fun?

I realize it's every man for himself when it comes to fine-tuning these resolutions. For me, freebies are just more clutter which distract you from what you truly want to read and are almost always fully priced at that.

I put books I get through gift cards into the TBR pile. The cost is 0 (as long as I don't go over in which case the last book gets that value assigned to it), but they are still waiting pages to be read as opposed to wishlist pages which might never have to be read.

Possession is 9/10ths of the law.

A LIST..that's a laugh. I go commando, no time for list when the sale is for one day. I live by 'the good discount'...if the genre is right and the reader comments don't suck lemons, it's a deal. I tend to react badly if I pass up a good deal then if I spent a buck on something worthless.

Those of you who are aware of the Cemetery Dance membership deal that ran in January will know why I'm hanging my head in shame right now.

Okay, that's a lie. I feel no shame. And it's one of my preferred genres.

And technically, I paid for a membership, not... Never mind. Even I can't pull off that one with a straight face. I did it, it's done.
