War Lord by Bernard Cornwell, the 13th and final novel in his Last Kingdom/Saxon Chronicles series, is currently down to just 99p at Kobo in the UK. It's not reduced at Amazon or Google Play. They both still have it priced at £1.99.

Don't know if either of you ^^^ ever get to California, but there is a very nice Steinbeck museum in Salinas, just inland from the Monterey Peninsula. (And in pre-pandemic days it had a nice café as well...)

Not sure I'd go with loving every single thing he wrote, but almost all, for sure...

The Pearl is one of those stories I had to read in high school but stayed with me. The lesson behind it stuck too.
