Hello!
I'm unable to download any of the files from any of the servers ([some-server].mrdcorn.net) in step #3 here. The page shows 403 not kual! try again.
Has anybody experienced similar issue?
If it is permanent, are there any other mirrors of the files (specifically for KT2)?

No such problem seen on the primary or any of the mirrors here.

Glad someone had the nerve to post before I did. I thought I must be doing something really stupid. Still could be, I guess...

Any http access to the links at step 3. Download your model's initial factory firmware image to your computer from one of these links...

gives a 403 message with this image.

Windows 10
Firefox, Edge, Chrome
http download from mobileread.com, i.e. just clicked the link.

Just click the link in the first post while viewing the post in your browser.
Use Firefox, do not use the FF - Flash downloader, no not use the FF - Download All add-ins.
Just click the link while viewing it in the browser.

It will not work from any other place than while being viewed with your browser in the first post.

Unless of course, you happen to be calling from an IP address range that I had to blacklist do to abuse.

In that case - PM me your IP address and I will see if I can send you a one-time ticket to download the file ONLY once.

Yes, I know what my 403 error image has to say. Duh....

browser: Firefox 48.0.2
i tried both clicking the links and opening in a new tab.

I confirm that it's the same error as @Arro specified.

After posting this i succeeded with downloading the files via Chromium.

Then tried changing my Firefox settings, deleting cookies, changing some security settings, but the error keeps appearing with Firefox.

I just checked both the access and the error logs of all of the servers -
Everything is working as intended.

The problem must be local to the two people reporting troubles.

Problem found - (at least for the one person responding) - -

No IPv6 support - which was intentional - I'll add a note to step #3 about that.

I used a couple of proxies, so a banned IP/range wasn't the issue. I was using Firefox with an add-on which strips or obfuscates referrers called Smart Referrer enabled.

I'm not certain how that affected Chrome or Edge, because I don't use them much and so they're really just in the "out-of-box" configuration. What probably happened was that I was having no joy with FF, opened other browsers and copied

http://eu-asia.mrdcorn.net/factory_KT2_5.6.0_initial

into the address bar, so it looked like a direct hit with no mobileread.com referrer.

Add-on disabled. Download and MD5 check are fine.

That is guaranteed to give you a 403 error from the hotlink protection logic.
Regardless of how many times per minute you click it or re-load it.

It seems that technical subject based web-sites attract script kiddies like honey attracts flies.

I had to get more than a bit creative to keep the "download noise" within reason.

It has been about nine weeks now, but during the first and second week, I know that more than one person has over 2,400 copies of that 403 image.

I am still waiting to hear what happens when they try to downgrade with that 403 image.


The 403 graphic art was by twobob, and was originally used as part of the KUAL (cool) distribution.
