Has anyone actually bought these dvd and can they supply a list of authors/titles?

I would hate it if they were all Mills and Boom.
I can imagine you could simply look to Project Gutenberg and scan the list of public domain titles. I can all but guarantee you are simply getting those... which are also available from many other sources for completely free.

Ok, here's a test. I have tried putting 3796 books at once yesterday on my Kindle 3. Most are MOBI files and I used Calibre.
Everything seems to work fine when reading, but searching for books is almost pointless because only a few books have been indexed. Indexing is painfully slow and I have no idea when it will finish. I wish there was a way to index books on my computer, I am sure that would save a lot of time.
Calibre doesn't automatically create collections, so I have no easy way to find my books. I think once the indexing is done (in 2-3 years maybe?), searching will work well and I might be able to find a book quickly and easily.

3796 books.

gold star to you!

i did raise the issue of indexing on a pc but was shot down by naysayers.

regarding collections why did you not use the free acolgate software which organizes it for you?

After putting 500 books on my Kindle it took around 6 hours for indexing to finish - I kept it plugged into the pc the whole time in case the battery ran out.

Not so much 'naysayers', but rather 'fact knowers'.

I was hoping to use it, but the form on is website is not working, so I cannot download it. As soon as that problem is fixed, I'll definitely use it.

I understand indexing would probably freeze it for a week if 3500 books were put on it probably , based on reports of a hundred books being put on it.

Well, I think Amazon made it's claim true.
I've put 2000 books on my Kindle and it takes 1,91 GB space, so my Kindle is good for another 2000 books in the future.

actually 1 gig is taken up by the operating system so you only another 1 gig

but what is the performance like?

how long did ittake to index?

did it freeze/reboot,etc.

is it upgraded to the latest firmware?

how do you search and find through so many books?

are in they collections or just files in alphabetical order in 200 content pages?

mine is due next week.

but in that case the wright brothers would never have flown the first plane as "fact knowers" said it was impossible.

Vugtitan, I'm sorry, I didn't realise about the 1 G for the system. But it should work to put 3500 books, I've got some huge books on it.

As for the performance: has got better with every update; faster and smoother. But still: after uploading a lot of books( more than 50) the Kindle needs an hour or more for indexing and it takes a lot of battery, so I let it load. But it is a lot faster than in the beginning.

Before the updates the Kindle freezed a few times on me, but I think it had to do with indexing the books. The Kindle can't handle anything beside it, when loading big amount of books. For a few books it should go without any problem. The latest update was good for that too.

Yes; I've upgraded it to the latest version and am happy about that. I couldn't use my searchfunction before, without the Kindle freezing, and now I can. Yes, it takes a lot of time to search all my books, but most of the time I search in a collection

I have organized my books in 20 collections, so I can find any book I want rather fast. It is advisable however to think hard about the collections; which one do you want and if you've got a load of books on one single subject---organise it alphabetically or in parts A-H, I-L etc. It's worth while thinking about it before one put any books on the Kindle; it saves a lot of time.
As category I have for example: crime/novel/mind/classic/cultural/info/travel/german/french/literature------------that give's not too many books in one selection.
In my iLiad, I used to sort everything by alphabet, but category works better for me and is faster.

About the freezing: I always managed to reboot the Kindle and I read about the good customerservice on MR, so I never actually (perhaps just a bit) panicked when it froze.
