I picked up the 950 earlier this week, and I must say that I am very impressed. Not only is the display spectacular to look at, but the drawing in text and text highlighting window can be left open, so that marking up documents for later is a breeze! Folder creation can be done in the unit, though it seems best to hook it up to a computer to actually fill those folders with books/pdf's. As most of you may have heard, the Sony software is abysmal - ugly, feature-free, and very disappointing. I am trying out Calibre (open source free-ware) and am finding it to be a much better tool, though time will tell if I will be able to totally get rid of the Sony ware. I guess that is one good thing about the 3G service - I will still be able to buy books if I do.

Unfortunately, Sony seems to have ignored their supply chain obligations to customers, so it is virtually impossible to find a slim cover, like the one that came with the 900. Maybe not a big deal for some, but I am pretty peeved, as it leaves me feeling like I can't lug it around like I would like to, for fear of damaging it.

Anyway, after looking at the Kindle3, 650, and 950, I am happy with my choice, and with the quality of this product. This is despite not caring at all about 3G coverage at the time of purchase - I would have been just as happy with simple wi-fi capabilities, I think.

Why do you say this? I've actually found it pretty easy to add everything I want to a folder in one go through the device.

Yes, it is a great device. Have been using mine since Saturday and love it. I'm actually thinking of buying another for my wife rather than just hand her my 505.

Covers will be available from Sony beginning around November 14th. I've already preordered one.

I was surprised at how much lighter the 950 feels than my 505. It is very light. And the touchscreen is great. Crystal clear and easy-to-use -- no need to actually touch the screen, although I tend to touch it but as if my finger were a feather. I couldn't be happier.

I got both the 650 and the 950 -- thought the 950 would be better because it's bigger but still light. In the end, I returned the 950 because it's too long and narrow. The text seems to go on too long on the page so it wasn't as comfortable to read as the 650. Also, the 650 is easier to carry around. Both are excellent readers, I think.

I've had the 950 since 10/27. It is superb. The canned reviews make it sound like there are only a few enhancements to the 900, which I also own; but there are LOTS of incremental improvements. I ordered the cover with built-in light (#PRSACL95B) on Sunday from Amazon (Vann's is the vendor.) It has shipped and will be here later this week. Check Amazon for the basic cover. BTW....the cover attachment system is typical Sony.....it does not fit (nor attach similarly to) any previous models.

The Digital Reader has a new review about the 950 here.

Huh, well, maybe I need to keep reading up on it. I was unable to do it intuitively. I am glad that it can be done.

How about maintaining markups? When I view a markup (highlight/note/underline) that I have done in machine, it is not reflected when I try to view the document on my computer. Is it just me?

From all that's written here, it seems that Santa's will have to buy me a 650 of 950 come December. There's just one thing I'd really like to know first and that's how the new generation handles large amounts of books? I only have experience with the 505 and mine, at least, refuses to handle more than a few hundred volumes. Any more than 350-400 or so and it will simply turn itself off while attempting to update the contents. Hence I have no option but to use PRS+ (which is no hardship, by any means) and browse through folders on my memory card.

Can I safely assume this is a non-issue on the new models?

No, you can't assume... still requires to scan for reindexing every time you add... Speed and quantity handling are better but if you already need PRS+ for your library size then I think you will run into the same problems on 650/950.

I have 434 titles on mine currently and it seems to handle them just fine. I haven't noticed any slowdowns or issues.

I need to check out the 950 in the store, I wish this was the 650. I just prefer the form factor of the 650 but it doesn't have the wireless connectivity. I was also hoping that B&N would come out with a color Nook. I almost ran out and ordered one when a friend sent me an email about the announcement of the touch color Nook but then I learned it's using LCD screen, not e-ink color, I was very disappointed! I would have preferred to get the Nook Color Touch Screen over the Sony Reader 950 Daily Edition if not for the LCD screen. So close and yet so far!

Early next year there will be color eReaders using with EPD technology but I can't wait for that anymore. Notion Ink is suppose to come out with their 10" Adam tablet this month so I cancelled buying a netbook for that. As for an eReader, I might just settle for the Sony 950 despite not being a fan of their bookstore.

Okay, so I have a really dumb question. I'm looking at getting either a 650 or a 950. I REALLY love the idea of that extra inch, but I don't need wifi or 3G.

Does the 950 have the capability of the 650, for user chosen standby wallpaper? Yes, I KNOW that's a really stupid thing to hinge a decision on, but there you have it.

You can view your notes via the Sony Reader Library software. You can even export them to a separate file. When you view the book within the Sony software there are icons in the lower left-hand corner for these features. You can also create notes/bookmarks within the Sony Reader Library software (not just on your ereader).
