Well, I can verify from personal experience that the screensaver hack and Ted Leung's font hack will keep Amazon from updating your device through wireless. My K2 has never received an automatic update while the hacks were installed, but inevitably updates with an hour after having them removed when updates are being pushed out over Whispernet. They're in place right now while I wait for an updated font hack, and I'm still on 2.3 (didn't bother removing them for the incremental 2.3.3 update).

For anyone who knows these sorts of things, is there any reason to believe that the new DRM scheme won't be cracked relatively soon? I'm another non Windows user, and though I haven't bothered with removing .azw DRM, it's nice to know the option is there.

If it's like the Kindle for Windows scheme, it's going to need disassembly and reverse engineering of the new Kindle software to work out how the per-book PID is generated. Even when that's done, it might be that the information used to generated the per-book PID isn't user accessible information on the Kindle - it might be necessary to write a Kindle app (or some other hack) to extract the info from a Kindle.

Bear in mind that the Kindle for Macintosh scheme hasn't been cracked yet, because no-one's disassembled the Kindle for Macintosh program well enough yet to reverse engineer the scheme there - it's probably similar to the Kindel for Windows scheme, but must be using different info, as the available system info isn't identical between Mac and Windows.

It might be that someone's been working on it feverishly since the first 2.5 beta, and it'll be out tomorrow. It could never happen. No-one knows, until or unless it happens.

Correct. If i redownload "new" books it gives me an error msg.

But after some reading and trying i was at least able to skindle them without using Kindle4PC just with the version 6 script of skindle.

I would post a link for those without Windows access but i think its against the forum rules (?). But it think with "skindle" and "DRM" everybody will find a way with the help of google

At least that should work out (although it is not very comfortable).

Let me confirm what you're saying here:

Have you downloaded a book for use on your physical Kindle, and have removed the DRM from that copy using skindle?

Or have you download a book for use with Kindle for Windows and have removed the DRM from that copy using skindle?

Thanks.

You have to download using K4W before skindling. Copy downloaded to kindle or K4M will not work.

That would be a neat trick, as skindle needs an install of Kindle4PC to work (though you don't need to run it during use, as opposed to unswindle).

IOW, I share pdurrant's questions.

Which wouldn't work anyway because skindle is Windows executable that only works on books downloaded to K4PC.

Dammit you are right i had the books already in my Kindle folder

That means you'll have to download them by Kindle4PC first which means you can also use the unswindle script with the old Kindle4PC version.

But you should be able to use Kindle4PC to download books even without Windows OS by using virtualbox or something like that under linux or BootCamp on MAC with Windows 7 Starter?

Ok its getting more and more complicated for people without Windows access but it is still possible i think.

I'm happy that i don't have to change anything for now i was always using unswindle script on my windows PC and that still works

Hmmm...decisions, decisions. I still have a little time yet, since Ted-san's font hacks haven't been repackaged for use with 2.5.2, and I refuse to upgrade until that happens, but it sounds like I should be giving this some additional thought. Thanks for the clarification.

You can repackage them fairly easily if you have python installed.

Download the old one, convert to a TGZ, extract all the files, delete the .sig, .dat, _install*, and __dir* directory, and repackage (using --sign but not --ex). Not trivial, but only takes about 2 minutes.

Good heads up as I weigh the considerations for upgrading my K1 to a K3.

With all of the industry drm and device changes/variants, it seems prudent to dedrm my books for archival purposes in calibre.

It seems that I would no longer be able to do this simply by saving the native Kindle file to the PC and running a script?

Instead, I would need to download an old version of Kindle4PC and another script? The link for the old kindle for pc has reached its limit..is there somewhere else I can get it? What else am I missing?

Every time I get set in a process it changes I just want the right to use what I buy without being tied to the vendor's whims. Thank goodness for this place

@Boston - This is one reason why if I "upgrade" to a K3, I plan to keep my K1 registered on my account and send all my books to my K1...so I can continue using the scripts I currently use.

As for an older version of K4PC...I think if you google for K4PC Beta, you'll probably find it.

Thanks...I tried to quickly google...and when I tried to link to the one download site, I got warnings...didn't see others but will look again when I have more time to spend...or maybe I'll just stick with my tried and true K1

There are tools which work with the latest version of K4PC. Unfortunately, it takes a little extra work. The newest iteration means the cover and title no longer appear when the dedrmed book is copied into Calibre. Requires a little work to copy the cover from Amazon and the description, and add it to the metadata. Oh, for the days with the Calibre plug-in! Just means I am a little more discriminating about what free books I download, and I make sure I keep up with my purchases and dedrm them immediately. I had 4 this morning, and using LZskindle, I couldn't tell which was which without opening them. I understand unswindle is better, but I cannot get it to work on my machine.

This has caused me to change my format of choice from mobi to epub. It is a lot easier to convert a dedrmed epub than it is to dedrm mobi from Amazon. This has caused me to purchase books elsewhere.

Unfortunately, if its more work, I'll just stick with my K1. It works just fine and I won't miss the improvements if I've never had them.

I find that interesting given the Kindle appears to be your device of choice (having even ordered a K3).

The reason I am even contemplating getting a K3 is because I often end up converting books from Amazon for my Sony (because it fits better in my purse and has collections). I'm not sure I would buy another Kindle if Amazon weren't my primary vendor for books. I would be interested in hearing your reasons.
