Before I purchased my nook I read maybe 3 books a year. I subscribe to quite a few magazines, mostly motorcycle and computer. I read them almost everyday. My wife is the big book reader in the family. That's why I got her a Kindle last Christmas. I always loved gadgets and after seeing how much my wife enjoyed reading with her Kindle I decided to get a reader for myself. I have read more books on my nook in the past 5 months that I have read in the past five years or longer. Instead of being a book freak that got a reading gadget, I am a gadget freak that got more interested in reading because of the ereader. I'm not a fast enough reader to read nowhere near the amount of some some of you are reading. Sometimes when I try to go through a book too quickly I find that my mind wanders and I'll read a couple of pages without knowing what I read and have to go back and read again. I think I'll be happy just reading 3 or 4 books a month.

I know you're not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but I have to say, you don't look like you're big on reading. You look more like you're big on beating the crap out of me for saying you're not big on reading...

i used to do around 400 novel length books a year, but i'm averaging less this year due to family issues and getting back into guitar, so probably will do around 200. if things resolve, might find time for 250 or so.

736 WPM and I wasn't skimming, with over 75% comprehension. If I'd "enjoyed" what I read the comprehension would have been significantly higher.
Also due to health issues I am retired, lots of hours in the day to fill. |

552 WPM + 82% comprehension. I'm not too concerned with my speed, but I was hoping the latter number would be higher given that I actually tried to pay attention to the sample text.
As for my yearly book count, it can all be attributed to taking public transit with long and boring commutes to anyplace interesting and persistent enough background noise that I can't watch video on the iPod without turning up the volume enough to burn out my hearing. Probably also having no cable tv at home and nigh-unwatchable reception for all but two local broadcasts, though the internet mitigates that somewhat. |

Well speaking for myself, I had a 5th grade teacher that had me come live with her for 2 months one summer, while she used me to beta test a new reading course.
Started out pretty much middle of the pack for my age group, and in 2 months was reading at the advanced college level for both speed and comprehension. Top that with some 45 years of daily practice, mostly reading for enjoyment, and well, its not that terribly hard. I think it helps to have a large vocabulary. Like anything else people do, practice can improve it, especially when coupled with good habits. Not that I read that fast all the time, but my wife does give me a hard time regularly about just sucking the words in, but not chewing them. ![]() |

@GhostHawk - That makes more sense. I think something that slows me down is that I have a tendency to vertically regress when the print is small (almost blind in one eye probably contributes) and the kindle has helped with this because I can set the print much larger.

But as GhostHawk mentions, practice really does help, as does consciously slowing one's speed/focusing attention to suit the material at first, and then gradually speeding up as one gets more comfortable with it. |
