No, seriously; I find my aversion to many words and phrases to be on the increase as well. Are these things we've been talking about really as trite as they appear, or am I becoming an old fuddy-duddy?

I propose we ban "utilize." It serves absolutely no purpose other than to make you somehow sound smarter. The word "use" is equivalent 100% of the time. I call words like this "wonder bra words." I'm sure you can understand why

Nope. And I'm not a big fan of teaching babies and toddlers how to speak like babies and toddlers; using stupid words for things. I don't see the point.

But thast's just me.

I second that! I get so mad at grandparents who shorten sentences. Drives me crazy!

My words for the 'banned' list:

"got" - sounds more and more like slang to me, and yet it is amazing how hard it is to work around it.

"utilize" - why can't we just 'use' something...?

When it comes to the pee pee dance, I prefer someone "show not tell." One can do the pee pee dance without telling me about it.

"validate" as used by MBAs and HR people, i.e., I need to validate that information.

Can't it be both?

I'm not normally too bothered (normally just amused) by most things suggested in this thread, usually figuring if the message is communicated successfully to me then language has done its basic job. However, I must admit to a rabid dislike of a compound similar to Steve's suggestion above: the use of "un-Australian" (especially by pollies and journos)

Cheers,
Marc
