People in the cars inhale *much* more as they are closer to the source of emisson - the exhaust of the car in front usually go right into the air system of the car behind. if you stay completely out of this system (out of the city) you might be better off, but if it is a question of getting no exercise vs. getting some, you'd be better of doing it than not. My local information may come down to that many Danes choose bycycling as a popular way of transport in bigger cities and towns - and compared to using the car, it's much healthier. I do remember visiting for example Athens or Rome *cough* - not to speak of La Paz (Bolivia) *cough* *cough* - but for most people in most places, the health benefits most definitely over-shadows any problems that any motor-car drivers will face in the same place - they don't even get the benefit of exercise.

Maybe it depends on location.
When I visited Amsterdam or even Vienna, their traffic flow was much better than in the UK.
