13xforever: I am far from US and only a few minutes ago have bought Cormac McCarthy's books (finally in ePub format) from US store, so there's no georestricions has been added, it should be configuration problem.

This is interesting. Your profile says you're in Russia? On the new Sony software that's not one of the options, so maybe you're still managing to 'fool' it that you're in the USA.

Has anyone in the Netherlands managed to access the new site through the new software, I wonder? Or anyone else in the UK?

There's a new ADEPT DRM that can't be circumvented? And how do you circumvent the Sony files if the script works off the ADE program?

Since there's no firmware upgrade, it displays badly on the 505: no full justification and no paragraph indents so with the ragged right edge and clean left edge and no blank lines between paragraphs, finding the end of a paragraph is left entirely to the imagination. That's the last book I buy from Sony until they and Adobe fix the firmware.

The only real curiosity this morning is that I went to check to see that I could still download the books I had previously bought and I see that roughly 20% are now listed as "Unavailable". So I did my search of their total titles as I've been doing the last couple of years and I see that they 14% fewer titles available at their new store than they did just last week. I assume that means they haven't converted all the titles to epub format yet so this may be a work in progress.
The Sony ePub books do look great on the nook. I had a Sony book that was to hard for me to read even at the largest font and now I can read it comfortably on the nook.

I guess the Sony Reader program and ADE work off the same key. Makes sense. Guess that answers the circumvention question.

That's pretty exciting: A whole store full of epub books that can with DRM that can be removed. Best thing to happen for ebooks since Amazon opened up shop for the Kindle.

Just downloaded MELTDOWN: A Free-Market Look at Why the Stock Market Collapsed, the Economy Tanked, and Government Bailouts Will Make Things Worse. I returned the ebook to Amazon earlier this year after realizing I had purchased a TPZ book. So Sony gets my money instead of Amazon in this instance because even though people complain that ePub with DRM isn't really an open format, DRM that can be removed makes it open enough for me. :-)

I opened up one of the ePub files and ran it through Calibre and converted it to a Mobi file and it looks good on my Kindle.

I just downloaded an installed "Reader Library 3.1" ( I guess that's what they call it now. They keep changing the name) software on my iMac (snow leopard) and it seems to work. Meh... I didn't like that it requires a packager and a reboot. I assume that is to install kext's in order to exchange data with the Sony readers.

I don't actually have a Sony any more. I used to maintain the software to buy gift certs for non-US people here. Of course, that really isn't needed anymore with the support for Adobe DRM and ePub support.

I do say, the eBook Store does look very nice. It displays well and it seems to be much faster than it used to be when I got started with my Sony.

It won't display the BBeB book that I had in my library (it was a freebee). But, there was an ePub version that I could d/l.

Sony has come a long way since the days of the PRS-500 and the Windows only software.

Just d/l'ed a Connecticut Yankee in King Aurthurs Court. Worked fine. However, there is no indication that it was successful. You see the "Status" icon spin for a second and that is all. BUt, when I looked in the library the ebook was there.

I think that the average user--ones who are not members of this site--ones who do not worry about DRM or even are aware of it--ones who just want to read a nicely formatted book--will not be happy with the change to ePub in its current form.

P.S. An opened ePub converted to LRF via Calibre looks great on my Sony.

By the way, Reader Library can still read LRF books that I have in my library on the Windows version.

It wouldn't read my .lrx. It kept sending me to the "conversion" screen.
