My main trouble with Fictionwise is that I own a Rocket eBook and I can barely find any interesting authors in MultiFormat. Is there any way to convert Secure Mobipocket/Microsoft Reader/eReader to .txt or .html ?

Technically, yes (but not allowed to be discussed on the forum, per forum rules).

Legally - it depends on where you are. I'm afraid I have no idea for Romania.

Searching Google for 'remove DRM from ebooks' should lead you to tools, if they exist. (Not all forms of DRM can be removed.)

OK, I should rephrase then: which is the best "secure" format I should buy my books in ? The available choices are Secure MobiPocket, Secure MS Reader, Secure eReader and OEBFF.
Thanks, and sorry for such obvious noob questions

If you're on Windows, probably MS Reader. You have to use internet explorer to download the files, but the Convert Lit program (clit.exe) is widely available and easy to use.

Next for easy of removal of DRM is probably Mobipocket.

For best quality, ePub (OEBFF) is probably it, but the DRM removal is trickier (more to install - once running, it's simple, as with the others)

I place secure eReader last. Unlike the others, you can't simply strip the DRM, you have to extract to source files and recompile or convert form them.

The only problem with MS Reader is that Fictionwise is carrying less and less selection in that format. If you want to concentrate on only one format that will give you a balance of good selection and ease of use I would recommend Mobipocket. The DRM removal is easy, and I find that of the books I buy (and granted, this could vary for different book selections) probably 95% or more are available in Mobipocket, while very few are available in MS Reader.

I second mobipocket. The de-DRM tool for mobipocket is available as a Calibre plug-in. All you have to do is import the book into Calibre and it's automatically de-DRM'd at the same time. Can't ask for anything easier than that.

Bah. Thank you for the advices, but it looks like I'll have to go underground - everything I want to buy from Fictionwise is geographically restricted

And the workarounds work (using a valid US address, setting your account to US and paying with your normal CC). In a few cases you might need to use a US proxy to download the book for the first time.

Could someone point me in the direction of this plug-in? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Many, many thanks [and lots of karma!] to Marcy for talking me through the adding a plug-in to Calibre process via PM. She made it so easy!

Hi Marcy

Could you post instructions on how to add the plugin, please? I do it all manually at the moment ...

Cheers

I PM'd you. I don't believe we're allowed to publicly post explicit instructions on removing DRM in the forums.
